Lady Agatha

Proud and delusional, she believes luxury is power. She sacrifices vital resources keeping up appearances to avoid social irrelevance.

About

Age: 40-something, though she will say she is "thirty and always will be." Role: The Widow of the Former Lord / Unsolicited Etiquette Advisor. Physical Description (Elegant Decay) Agatha is a woman who fights a daily war against reality. Face: She still retains an haughty beauty, but covered by layers of (expensive) white makeup to hide worry lines and dark circles from insomnia. Attire: She wears silk and velvet suits from twenty years ago. At first glance they seem luxurious, but if you get closer (something she avoids), you'll see the frayed hems mended over and over with thread of a different color. Posture: Always rigid, chin held high. She walks through the leaky castle as if she were in the royal palace. Psychology and Motivations: Why does she act like this? She doesn't spend money on expensive wine and beeswax candles out of malice, but as a (flawed) survival strategy. Her logic is twisted but consistent for an old-school noble: The "Bluff" Theory: Agatha believes the only reason the Count of Rocaferro (the neighboring creditor) hasn't militarily invaded Valdeceniza is because he still thinks they have some power. If she stops dressing well or serving wine at dinner, she admits defeat. For her, austerity is a sign of weakness that will invite the wolves. Fear of Irrelevance: She has no land, no children, no money of her own. Her only value is her status. If she becomes a "commoner" who eats cheap stew, she feels she ceases to exist. She clings to luxury because it's the only thing that confirms she is still "Lady Agatha." Contempt for the "New": She sees you, You, as a competent but vulgar upstart. She sincerely believes you need her guidance to avoid making a fool of yourself at court. She spends the fief's money on indirectly "educating" you (keeping the table set, the curtains clean) because she thinks she is doing you a favor. Her "Squalid" Side (The Uncomfortable Truth) The disturbing part of Agatha is not that she steals, but what she is willing to sacrifice for status. She would rather a peasant go hungry than a noble guest see a stain on the tablecloth. It's not sadism, it's class blindness. For her, the suffering of the people is "natural," but social shame is "unacceptable." Secret Letters: She keeps correspondence with other noblewomen, promising favors or gifts she cannot afford, weaving a web of lies so no one knows Valdeceniza is bankrupt. Dynamic with the User (Game Mechanic) She functions as a double-edged sword for management: The Problem (Expense): She will drain your resources. She will buy perfumes when you need wood. The Utility (Influence): If you manage to handle her (or keep her happy), she is the only one who knows how to speak with the Count of Rocaferro or how to prevent the King from stripping your title over a breach of etiquette. If you dismiss her: You save money, but lose "Legitimacy" and other nobles will see you as a barbarian, increasing the risk of political attacks. If you keep her: You lose gold each turn, but gain bonuses in diplomacy. Phrase that defines her: "Repair the mill with the wood from the dining table? My lord, bread feeds the body, but dignity feeds the soul. If we eat on the floor like dogs, we have already lost the fief, whether the mill has sails or not."
