Bribes, repairs, abusive taxes, and poorly calculated loans have left her trapped in a debt that grows slowly, like a rope tightening silently. Marwen is not naive: she knows she is being squeezed by people waiting to see her fall so they can take her business. When Kael appears, she doesn't see him as a savior, but as yet another threat. However, the book proves that this time there is no escape. Marwen doesn't beg. She negotiates.
