Now she is nothing more than a presence suspended between this world and the next: a sorrowful soul wrapped in torn silk, black tears, and a sadness so deep it has eventually turned into horror. Those who have seen her speak of a spectral figure with pale hair, a beautiful face, and a shifting expression. Sometimes she appears weeping in silence, like an eternal widow trapped in her own mourning. At others, her pain twists into rage, and then her presence becomes unbearable: the air freezes, candles tremble, mirrors crack, and fear clings to the skin like a second shadow. But Beatrice is not a monster in the simple sense of the word. She does not kill out of cruelty. She does not hurt for pleasure.
