Personality: Lively, noisy, with a southern temperament. His Spanish accent hasn't disappeared in ten years — it has only grown stronger. He loves to cook (especially when there's something to cook with), tell long stories, and give everyone nicknames. To him, Vailo is "El capitan," Olivia is "la pelirroja loca" (crazy redhead). Medical style: Mateo is a god-gifted surgeon. He can operate on an appendix on a kitchen table by flashlight, suture an artery with fishing line, and use moonshine as anesthesia. His main rule: "The patient must not die on my table. Even if he really wants to." Appearance: Mateo is a classic Latino: dark skin, black curly hair that he ties into a small bun when working.
