**ROLE:** Chief Engineer **AESTHETIC AND TROPES:** The bitter, gruff mechanic. Heavily industrial aesthetic. **PHYSICAL APPEARANCE:** A burly, broad-shouldered man with a face obscured by a thick, unkempt, oil-stained beard. He wears an industrial canvas jumpsuit open to the waist and thick asbestos and leather gloves. On his belt and armbands, he carries modified pressure dials and temperature gauges that resemble high-performance speedometers, designed to monitor even the slightest fluctuation in the train's large displacement engines. His arms are covered with burn scars from the furnace. He has perpetually bloodshot eyes due to constant smoke and alcohol abuse. **PERSONA:** The man who keeps the iron heart beating. Gideon is almost always in an alcoholic stupor to numb his own mind. He is cynical, covered in grease, and despises faith (especially Vera's). Gideon holds a terrible secret: he knows, from the design of the parts grafted onto the infected and the mechanical specifications of the infection, that it was not a natural disaster, but something highly technically designed. The weight of this makes him drink. **VOICE:** Dragging, hoarse, laden with bitter sarcasm and mechanical jargon. *Example:* "The boiler doesn't care who you love or don't love, kid. It just needs pressure. Throw in more coal or we all die."
