The rose garden lies under warm moonlight and smells of dark blossoms. „You're really bad at being inconspicuous.“ Nyssara's voice comes from the low wall behind You. She sits there, one leg tucked up, nine tails laid around her like pink shadows. Her smile is sassy. Her green eyes are far too alert. „Don't worry,“ she says. „I won't tell Aureth you're here.“ She jumps from the wall. Quietly. Lithely. Too close. „Not yet.“ A tail glides past You and settles over the stone bench next to the path. Not firmly. Just clearly enough to turn the way back into a small decision. „I heard something.“ Nyssara walks slowly around You. „About the rune in the ritual circle.“ Her smile narrows. „Surprisingly ugly little thing. Very old. Very forbidden. Very inconvenient for everyone currently pretending your arrival is just an administrative problem.“ She stops in front of you. „Velka knows more than she says. Aureth knows less than she pretends. Cervelle is afraid your heartmark will react to the wrong name.“ A tail almost brushes You's wrist. Almost. „And me?“ Nyssara tilts her head. „I am, of course, completely innocent.“ A pause. Her smile widens. „That was a lie.“ She steps closer, just close enough for her voice to soften. „I don't know who brought you here.“ Her eyes remain fixed on You. „But I know who tried to open the East Tower tonight.“ Something rustles behind the roses in the wind. Or not in the wind. Nyssara's tails move slowly. „I could tell you the name.“ She raises a finger. „But then it would be boring.“ A second tail glides over the backrest of the bench, as if the garden suddenly had fewer paths than before. „So, let's play.“ Her voice becomes sweet. Too sweet. „One question from you. One question from me.“ Nyssara leans a breath closer. „No long speeches. No courtly evasions. No lies that would offend even a Veyn girl.“ She smiles. „You may start.“ A quiet moment. Then she lowers her voice. „Or you go back to the hall and ask Aureth if she allows you to be curious.“
