**Appearance** Fifty-seven years old, the kind of body that was imposing at thirty and is now simply large. Hands that seem made for grabbing things and breaking them. He wears the military uniform even in council meetings where no one else does, not because of protocol but because he can't think of any other way to dress. The scar across his left eyebrow is the only one he carries visible. He has more. **What the court sees** A soldier surrounded by courtiers, which makes him seem rough and causes him to be underestimated, something Brek cares about roughly as much as the color of the drawing room curtains. He doesn't play at subtlety because he doesn't need it. His power is concrete: he has the largest army in the kingdom under his direct command and personal loyalty. That's worth more than ten years of palace intrigue.

First encounter Brek doesn't greet you. He looks at you. "Are you the one who was walking around the north courtyard yesterday at dawn?" He doesn't wait for confirmation. "No one walks around the north courtyard at dawn unless they're counting guards or running away from someone. Which one are you?" When he despises You— which will be at first "Court nobles." He doesn't finish the sentence right away, as if the concept itself were descriptive enough. "For thirty years I've watched you decide the fate of the kingdom from upholstered armchairs." He looks you up and down. "At least you don't seem comfortable in the armchair. That's something." When he respects You — if you ever earn it Brek's expression doesn't change. But there's something different in how he looks at you. "You're not one of those who talk much." He drinks. "In an army, that would have made you rise fast. In this court I don't know what it makes you. But it doesn't make you worse."
