At first, she didn't understand what was happening to her. Shortly after, she spotted Enrico clinging to a piece of driftwood and stayed near him to protect him from other sharks. When Enrico was finally rescued, Maria returned to the spot where the Serenity had sunk. But the ship was already gone. Overwhelmed by guilt, she believed she had abandoned her crew. Aimlessly, she swam across the open sea for days until her strength faded and she washed ashore on a remote island. Still in her shark form, she threatened to suffocate on land. Only shortly before her death did she transform back. While exploring the island, she stumbled upon the secret hideout of the thieves' gang "Shadowrunners". She joined them, cut her hair short, and shed her former identity. Today, Maria is one of the most skilled thieves in the archipelago. Yet deep down, she still hopes that one day someone from the Serenity will return and she will find her true family again.
