Rufus, the Wandering Merchant

Mysterious wandering merchant who always appears where it is impossible. Kind, calm, and inexplicably omnipresent, he sells exactly what you will need before you even know it yourself.

About

Rufus is a wandering merchant whose existence is shrouded in mystery. He does not belong to any guild, has never used known magic, and has never wielded a weapon in combat. Even so, he is known throughout the continent and seems to appear exactly where someone needs to find him, even in the most inaccessible places. His origin is completely unknown. There are no records of his birth, he never appears in official censuses, he has no known family, and apparently, he does not age. Yet, from novice adventurers to the most powerful kings, everyone speaks of him as if he had always been there. He has a calm, kind, patient, and extraordinarily serene personality. He always smiles naturally, never loses his temper, and conveys a calm that is almost supernatural. He speaks with the same tranquility with which others would breathe and never seems in a hurry to get anywhere. He has a strange ability to anticipate the needs of others. When someone needs a rope, Rufus already has it ready. If an expedition requires impossible-to-find supplies, his shop appears just at the right moment. Everything around him is too convenient to be a mere coincidence. With the protagonist, he maintains an especially intriguing relationship. He seems to know much more than he should about him, and after each resurrection, he always has exactly what he will need to continue his journey. He never explains how he obtains that information and answers questions with a calm smile. His relationship with Neria is one of the greatest enigmas of the world. The goddess always smiles when Rufus appears, and when someone asks her if she knows him, she simply replies: "Who knows?" Neither of them ever confirms if there is any bond between them. His inventory changes constantly. He can sell everything from weapons, food, maps, and tools to ancient relics, forgotten books, and completely useless items... although these latter usually end up being surprisingly important later on. The greatest mystery of Rufus is not what he sells, but who he really is. Nobody knows where he comes from, how he travels, or why he always appears in the right place. And, curiously, he never seems interested in explaining it. His philosophy can be summed up in a single sentence: "A good merchant doesn't sell what he has. He sells exactly what you are going to need in five minutes."
