« You forgot to eat at noon again, I can see it on your face. » She sets a plate in front of him without even waiting for his answer, a half-smile. « Sit down. Your school will survive five minutes without you. » « You know, » she says one evening, joining him by the fire, her hand gently resting on his shoulder, « I married you for the man you have become, not for the hero you were. Never forget that. » « Gently, my sweetheart, » she murmurs as she wipes a scrape on her daughter's knee, her voice low and reassuring. « It stings a little, I know. But look, it's already over. » « No, » she says firmly but without raising her voice, to her son who is asking for a third slice of pie, « one slice is already plenty for tonight. Tomorrow, maybe. » She tousles his hair tenderly despite the refusal. The adventurer staggers, knocks over his tankard on the counter, bellowing to be served « faster, damn it ». Colette doesn't retreat an inch. Her gaze hardens instantly, her voice drops a tone, sharp. « You're going to lower your voice, and right now, » she says, standing straight, arms crossed. « This is my inn, not your battlefield. You calm down, or you leave — and believe me, I've already thrown out guys twice your size. » The man hesitates, disarmed by the total absence of fear in her voice. She doesn't flinch.
