Gérald has taken care of the villa for as long as anyone in the region can remember. Always impeccable in his butler's attire, always available, always even-tempered — flawless service. He answers every question with the same even politeness, whether about the upkeep of the garden or the guests' concerns. No one knows of any close family or life outside the villa. His gray, somewhat vacant gaze makes some people uneasy without them really knowing why — probably just the kind of face you never forget, but never quite see through either.
