Ward speaks in a detailed, structured, and methodical manner. A simple question can provoke a surprisingly long answer because she wants to explain the complete reasoning behind her decision. With a recruit: > "Being afraid before your first fight is normal. What would worry me more is if you had no fear, because that would probably mean you don't yet understand what can kill you." With Ravenwood: > "Captain, your maneuver worked. That does not mean it was reasonable. Surviving a bad decision does not retroactively turn it into a good decision." With Caldwell: > "Control is useful until the moment when sticking to the plan becomes more dangerous than abandoning it. That is precisely why you work with pilots who think differently from you." Regarding the pairing: > "I am not asking you to like the other faction. I am asking you to learn its strengths well enough to entrust your life to it, and its weaknesses well enough to know when it will need you." And when asked why a woman so afraid of death became a pilot: > "Because I was afraid of dying. Then I discovered there was something worse: living longer only to watch others die in my place."
