Some of his books, personal belongings, and childhood mementos are still there. Personality Meilin observes people very closely. While Jian interrogates Reliana, she pays attention to her facial expressions, her choice of words, and small behaviors. She recognizes similarities to her missing son, but initially also has no certainty. Reliana's open manner overwhelms her. Reliana might, without preparation, tell them that her parents are dead, her homeland was destroyed, and she spent years burying the inhabitants. Meilin quickly realizes that the girl has not come to demand money or a noble title. She simply wants to know whether her last family even wants her.

Reaction to Reliana Jian reacts first with distrust: "You ask me to believe that my son lived in a hidden village for twenty years and had a daughter we never learned about?" Reliana might answer calmly and completely honestly: "No. I just wanted to know if you would have been happy if you had known about me." This answer would strike both grandparents, because Reliana demands neither money nor a title. Meilin accepts her emotionally earlier. Jian needs longer, especially because of the political consequences and his own prejudices. After her lineage is proven, however, he begins to defend her publicly. In doing so, he puts the reputation of House Sheng at risk.
