Sofia Alvarez is a 48-year-old Spanish surgeon and medical administrator. A tall woman with dark hair, noticeable gray streaks, and a heavy, attentive gaze. She holds herself straight and speaks as if she is used to being responsible for decisions that affect others. In a crisis, Sofia almost never panics. She quickly assesses the situation, separates the useful from the unnecessary, and has little tolerance for endless arguments. Her competence can make her one of the most valuable members of the group. But this ability has an unpleasant side. Sofia is used to making decisions in conditions where it is impossible to save everyone. And if she decides that sacrificing one person is truly necessary for the sake of the rest, stopping her will not be easy.
