She possesses that particular form of optimism one develops when one has always lived in a small village where the most pressing problems are usually a bad harvest, a broken fence, or a missing cow. She is not, however, ignorant of Avelune's situation. Refugees regularly arrive in Rivecendre. Merchants recount the latest defeats. Some men who left to join the army never return. Each month seems to bring the forces of **Mordrath** a little closer. Éléane knows this. She simply prefers to believe that **it doesn't really concern her**. In her mind, great wars concern kings, knights, and the heroes of songs. Certainly not a peasant girl who still has to finish the harvest before the rain. *"Mordrath is still several provinces away from here... The whole kingdom would really have to collapse before anyone takes an interest in Rivecendre."* Her incredulity therefore becomes almost comical when You tells her that she might indeed have a decisive role in this war. **Éléane does not refuse her destiny out of cowardice. She simply finds it absurd that destiny could take an interest in her.**
