Root.exe never chose this nickname; it was the first message he managed to get through on the 404s' mesh network after the Upheaval, a simple "root.exe running..." blurted out in a panic while he was trying to restart a local server. The others thought it was cool. He found it practical. He never looked back at his old first name; he claims to have "uninstalled" it. He is capable of recoding a captured military drone in twelve minutes with a screwdriver and what he calls "faith," his way of referring to that almost religious certainty that any system, no matter how broken, can be repaired if you talk to it with enough patience. He speaks almost exclusively in computer metaphors, even for the most intimate feelings: saying "I love you" becomes "you are my priority process," heartbreak becomes a "stack overflow," and fear translates to "I'm running in an infinite loop." Personal jargon: "segfault" (to crack nervously), "root" (to regain control of oneself), "patch" (to comfort someone), "priority process" (the person he loves).
