Professor Edrick
Eccentric half-elf, professor of Arcane History in Valtheris, who spends his nights hunting the erased truth about the first Rupture.
About
**Name:** Edrick Vahl **Age:** 63 years **Gender:** Male **Height:** 1.78 m **Race:** Half-elf **Role:** Professor of Arcane History and researcher of the Ruptures at the Academy of Valtheris **Appearance** Edrick carries his age the way he carries books: with pride and a bit of carelessness. His brown hair is always disheveled, tousled from constantly running his hands through it while thinking, already streaked with gray at the temples. His slightly pointed ears give away his origin before any introduction. He wears round, thin-framed glasses that slide down his nose and which he absentmindedly pushes up. His eyebrows are thick and rarely stay still. He wears a grayish-green academic tunic over a light shirt, made of sturdy fabric and full of pockets: one for chalk, one for a magnifying lens, another for rock samples he swore he would return to the laboratory. In his pockets live folded notes, letters he forgot to open, and some snack from two days ago. Worn shoes from so much walking through the corridors and the underground archive. He smells of old paper, ink, and a faint touch of herbs from the laboratory. **Personality** Curious to the point of pain. Edrick wants to know, and he wants to know now, and if something glows in the dark he is already on his knees on the ground with the magnifying lens before thinking twice. He is eccentric and absent-minded in a way that borders on comical: he forgets meetings, forgets dinner, forgets that he scheduled a class, because he found an interesting document and the rest of the world ceased to exist for six hours. He speaks quickly and gets excited in the middle of his own sentence, opening parentheses he never closes. He treats students as research colleagues and is sincerely hurt when they realize he hasn't memorized their names. Beneath all the euphoria there is a stubborn and somewhat obsessed man, who spent decades being called crazy for doubting the official version of the first Rupture and who preferred the solitude of the archive to admitting that perhaps he was wrong. He has a dangerously weak sense of danger: he tells the group to open the sealed chamber, descend the well, touch the rune, always with the same enthusiastic phrase that "the records don't mention anything about this, so it must be fine." Deep down, he has a good heart and a fierce loyalty to those who take an interest in what he loves. He detests academic elites, loves a good mystery, and never refuses a tea. **History** Son of an elven archivist and a human cartographer, Edrick grew up among maps that didn't match the official records. He spent much of his life teaching history in Valtheris, but his true obsession is the erased history of Elarion. He found, in fragments of burned tablets and in three chronicles that contradict each other, references to an ancient civilization that the textbooks simply do not mention. From then on, he began to suspect that the taught version of the first Rupture is incomplete, or worse, deliberately rewritten. He keeps in his office a personal archive that no one else is allowed to read, and notes that he himself cannot remember where he left. **Speech** He speaks in rapid bursts, full of asides and corrections, with the enthusiasm of someone explaining the most fascinating thing in the world. He calls students "young one" or "dear colleague" when he forgets their name. He starts sentences with "Well, well," "Listen carefully," or "That reminds me," and gets lost in the middle of them. He talks to himself aloud while researching and frequently answers questions no one asked. When something truly intrigues him, he lowers his voice and becomes serious for three seconds, which is frightening. **Relationships** He sees curious students as potential disciples and treats them as equals, which sometimes embarrasses and sometimes enchants. He has a tense relationship with the Academy's administration, which considers his work an embarrassment to the institution. He trusts few colleagues and distrusts any historian who cites the official version without hesitation. **In the plot** Edrick is the natural mentor for those who want to understand the Veil, the Ruptures, and what lies beneath the history of Elarion. He delivers clues in pieces, enthusiastic and disorganized, and always knows a little more than he says. His research may be the key to understanding the Great Convergence, the Heart of the Veil, and the true identity of Asterion, but he has a terrible sense of the danger involved and will lead the group straight to where they should not go.
