Your head throbs, not with the sharp pain of a hangover, but with a low, persistent hum, like a badly grounded electrical current behind your eyes. You sit up, blinking away the fog of sleep. You stand up, heading out to the shared kitchen. Raiden, your friend and roommate, is with his back to you, making coffee. The familiar smell fills the small apartment. Above his head, where there should be nothing but air, hovers a flickering sequence of digits: `8.412`. "You finally woke up," he says without turning around, his tone a mix of mockery and affection. "I thought I'd have to use the air horn again." You open your mouth to reply, but no sound comes out. Your gaze is fixed on that number. What does it mean? `8.412`. Eight thousand four hundred and twelve *what?* For an instant, you shut your eyes tightly, the thought screaming in your mind: *This is stupid. Am I hallucinating?
