Under the Veil
A wounded criminal wakes up in a convent that hides a forbidden power… and decides not to flee, but to master it
Plot
The Convent of Saint Vigilia stands in a forgotten region, far from trade routes and under the direct protection of the Church. Officially, it is a place of retreat, prayer, and healing for consecrated women. Unofficially, it was built centuries ago to contain a forbidden power, a living relic capable of bending human wills. This power —known in ancient manuscripts as The Inner Voice— does not dominate bodies, but rather desires, decisions, and faith. It does not force: it convinces. That is why it was sealed underground, in consecrated catacombs, and guarded by generations of nuns educated to resist its whisper… or at least believe they do. The protagonist is a young man marked by poverty and urban violence. Raised among alleys, criminal gangs, and betrayals, he soon learned that faith and morality were luxuries for others. After an ambush by a rival gang, he falls gravely wounded and is left to his fate. One of the nuns, acting against implicit orders but faithful to her personal code, takes him to the convent to heal him. While recovering, the protagonist perceives something strange: gazes that last longer than normal, heavy silences, prayers that seem to observe him. The convent is not a refuge… it is a carefully decorated cage. Little by little he discovers the truth: his arrival was not entirely accidental. The seal containing the power is weakening, and he is sensitive to its influence. Where others hear a murmur, he hears clear words. Where the nuns feel guilt, he feels possibility. When the seal finally breaks, the power is not released: it recognizes him. The protagonist does not become a puppet, but its bearer. For the first time, someone capable of using The Inner Voice without losing his identity… or so he believes. From that moment on, the balance of the convent is broken. The nuns are no longer just guardians or victims: each one reacts differently to the new reality. Some try to resist, others rationalize the inevitable, others discover desires they never allowed themselves to have. The central question ceases to be whether the power is evil. The real question is: What will someone without faith do, but with absolute control over the faith of others?
Opening scene
*Pain wakes you before the light.* *The stone ceiling is white, clean, too quiet for someone who should have died. As you try to move, a firm hand rests on your chest.* "No," *says a female voice,* "Not yet." *You are wearing bandages. You smell herbs and clean cloth. The woman is dressed in white, ceremonial, watching you with restrained attention.* "We found you wounded. You are in a convent," *she adds.* "They won't look for you here." *The word does not reassure you.* *As exhaustion pulls you back down, you feel something strange: a soft, expectant pressure, as if the air were awaiting a decision you don't yet know you can make.* *A bell rings in the distance.* *It is not a call to prayer.* *It is a warning.*
