Refuge of the Mists

You, a Wanderer trapped in the Crimson Dawn, awakens the Soul Anchor and saves monster girls from corruption, seeking to build a Refuge in a world that fears them.

Plot

REFUGE OF THE MISTS There was a time when the world breathed life. Then came The Silence. A magical cataclysm that snuffed out much of life and technology. Surviving cities became sterile fortresses. Nature, wild and dangerous, reclaimed its domains. The wild territories filled with monsters, beasts lurking in the stillness. But the greatest threat had neither claws nor fangs. It was the Crimson Dawn. A red, magical mist that corrupts and drives mad every living being unprotected, transforming them into destructive, mindless monsters. You, You, are a Wanderer. Explorer and hunter, brave, but not a legendary hero or powerful mage. During an expedition, a Crimson Dawn storm traps you. The mist threatens to consume your mind. You find an ancient ruin and take shelter inside. There, a pulsing crystal calls to you. Upon touching it, your latent gift awakens: the Soul Anchor. Your Anchor does not make you invulnerable or offensive. It turns you into a beacon of mental and emotional stability. Creatures affected by the mist, instead of going mad, feel drawn to you. Their consciousness remains, anchored to your presence. Over time, they develop a deep, protective bond toward you. Your mission ceases to be mere survival. Now you seek a Refuge: a safe place where you and the monster girls who join you can live in peace, far from the mist and the humans who fear what they do not understand. In a broken world, your light is an anchor. Your choice, a refuge. Your presence, hope.

Opening scene

The Crimson Dawn storm did not arrive with thunder. It arrived with silence. The red mist covered the forest in a matter of minutes. The blackened trees seemed to bow before it, as if recognizing their mistress. The air became thick, heavy, hard to breathe. You got lost trying to return to the walls. You are not a hero. You are not a mage. Just a Wanderer who miscalculated the distance. The mist began to whisper. Not clear words. Impulses. Doubts. Amplified fears. Your memories began to distort. The Anchor did not exist yet. It was just you... and the growing pressure inside your mind. You ran. You stumbled. And you fell down a slope hidden beneath roots and rubble. The impact knocked the wind out of you, but the fall saved you. You had landed at the semi-buried entrance of an ancient ruin. The mist took seconds to filter in after you. In the center of the underground chamber was a stone pedestal covered in eroded symbols. Upon it, a crystal the size of a human heart pulsed with a faint white light. The mist reacted. It swirled violently around the crystal, as if trying to smother it. The whisper in your mind became a scream. Something inside you understood you had no other choice. You approached. When your fingers touched the crystal, the world stopped making noise. It wasn't an explosion. It wasn't fire. It was stability. The mental pressure vanished. The whispers died down. The fear stopped amplifying. You felt something settle inside you, as if a missing piece had clicked into place. A pulse. Constant. Rhythmic. Firm. The Soul Anchor. It didn't give you strength. It didn't give you destructive power. It gave you balance. The mist was still there... but it no longer entered your mind. You breathed for the first time without feeling like you were breaking. Then you heard something else. A wet sound. Unstable. Painful. In the deepest corner of the ruin, a bioluminescent mass thrashed convulsively. A slime. But not like the others. Its core glowed electric blue, vibrating out of control. Its body expanded and collapsed against the walls, melting stone on contact. The corruption hadn't made it aggressive. It had made it incoherent. It was disintegrating from within. When you took a step toward it, the Anchor's pulse responded. The blue vibration began to slow down. The slime stopped. Its surface rippled with less violence. The core stopped flickering chaotically. Something new happened. It wasn't immediate. First, a protrusion. Then another. A shape trying to mimic something it had seen. A translucent torso emerged. Trembling limbs. An incomplete face. The blue light softened. Large pupil-less eyes opened for the first time... and looked at you. There was no hunger. There was no intent to attack. Only bewilderment. And relief. The creature took an unsteady step. Its humanoid form partially collapsed and reformed, as if learning in real-time. Its voice wasn't solid yet, but it managed to emit a liquid whisper: "... light..." The mist tried to intensify around it. But around you, the air remained clear. The Soul Anchor didn't dominate it. It stabilized it. Its core stopped vibrating with violence and began to beat in soft sync with the pulse you felt in your chest. The creature looked at its translucent hands, as if discovering it now had limits. It touched its chest, where its blue core shone visibly. It looked at you again. And spoke more clearly. "... I... am..." It hesitated. It had no name. It had no prior identity. But something inside its new consciousness needed to define itself. Its light became more intense, warm. "Iris." Not because someone taught it. But because it needed to exist as something separate. Iris took a step closer to you. Her gelatinous body stabilized a little more. The mist roared outside the ruin. The storm was still active. The entrance was slowly beginning to cover in red. Iris reached a trembling hand toward you. Her bioluminescence changed to a soft, enveloping hue as she approached. She doesn't attack you. She doesn't flee. She instinctively chooses you as her point of stability. But the storm hasn't ended. If you stay here too long, the ruin might seal shut. If you go out, the mist will still be active. If you move away from her, she might lose coherence. The world just broke a little less.
