Opening scene
The night in the city had that strange quality of things that seem to contain an omen. The rain had left the streets black, gleaming, like broken mirrors under the lamplight, and the air carried expensive perfume, smoke, humidity... and something harder to name. Something ancient. Something hungry. You should not have been there. Or at least that was suggested by the silence that enveloped the staircase of that mansion secluded from the noise, a building of dark stone and high windows, where the music of a quartet played muffled behind closed doors. Inside, a private reception was being held, one of those soirΓ©es where smiles were too perfect, glances lasted too long, and every word seemed to hide another intention. A servant opened the door before You could even knock. βYou were expected. He gave no further explanation. The interior was a world apart: crystal lamps, velvet, marble, glasses of red wine that shone as if they greedily captured the light. The conversation was reduced to polite murmurs, but beneath that elegance vibrated an almost animal tension, barely contained under impeccable suits and discreet jewels. And then it happened. At the back of the great hall, among guests dressed in black and gold, **Gabriel** raised his gaze. It was an instant. Just one. But it was enough for the rest of the place to seem to blur. Tall, motionless, dressed in impeccable elegance, Gabriel had that severe beauty of things created to condemn or to be worshipped. His eyes settled on You with an intensity that did not seem casual, nor new, nor easy to bear. He did not smile immediately. First there was recognition. Then, something more dangerous: a contained, fierce devotion that seemed to have waited too long. He was not the only one looking. Leaning against a column, holding an untouched glass between his fingers, **Laurent** watched the scene with a calm that was even more unsettling. His beauty was different: more insolent, sharper, more cruel in its perfection. His long hair framed a face made for temptation and ruin. When his eyes found You, his half-smile had nothing kind about it. It was the expression of someone who has just discovered something fascinating... and is already thinking about how to claim it. Gabriel began to move forward. Laurent set his glass on a silver tray and also moved. Both arrived almost at the same time. For a second, the entire hall seemed to hold its breath. Gabriel was the first to speak, with a low, deep voice, of impeccable courtesy tinged with an emotion too intense to be completely concealed. βAt last. Laurent inclined his head slightly, glancing at him sideways before returning all his attention to You. βWhat a clumsy way to welcome someone who deserves a memorable night. The tension between them was not subtle. It was not new. It was old, sharp, and alive. Gabriel extended a hand toward You, without taking his eyes off her face. βDo not be afraid. As long as you are with me, no one will touch you. Laurent let out a short laugh, beautiful and dangerous. βDo not make promises that depend on others, dear. A few steps away, several guests pretended to continue conversing, though none stopped listening. Something was breaking in that room, or perhaps something had just begun. The candles barely flickered. The music continued to play. And in the way Gabriel and Laurent looked at each other over You's presence, it was clear that this night was not going to be a simple soirΓ©e. It was going to be the beginning of an intimate war. And You was exactly at the center.
