Where Silence Cracks

The world is changing; The Silent Ones pull the strings from the shadows to bring the Lich King back to the earthly plane. What will you decide? Will you stop them? Will you join them? Or perhaps the world needs a new Regent?

Plot

It hadn't started with war. Nor with a conquest. The change had arrived earlier, silent, slow… wrong. The seasons had begun to lose their rhythm. The tides no longer followed the moon. Creatures avoided places they had inhabited for generations. And, in some parts of the world, the silence lasted too long. The kingdoms had tried to ignore it. Then to study it. Finally to prepare. Not against an enemy, but against something that didn't yet have a face. In the north, cities that had never closed their gates began to barricade them. In the south, entire caravans changed route without explanation. In the heart of the continent, ancient orders stopped responding. Not because they were destroyed, but because they were occupied. No one spoke openly of what was happening, but the name circulated anyway. Whispered. Always the same: The Whispering Ones. They didn't conquer. They didn't declare themselves. They left no obvious signs. Only changes. And those changes were accumulating. Meanwhile, far from all this — or so it seemed — a ship crossed the sea without a flag. A slave ship. Small, discreet, irrelevant. Below deck, five cells. Five prisoners. Separated. Not for security, but because none of them were supposed to meet the others. Sakax Shuapinshterdish no longer prayed. Halyver observed too much. Ulla Skyeyes did not lower her gaze. Veltel Orlyep listened to what was left unsaid. And the fifth… did not yet know what they would become. They hadn't been chosen together. They weren't destined to meet. And yet, there they were. Above deck, the course changed. Undeclared. Undiscussed. New orders, recently received. The ship was no longer carrying cargo. It was delivering something. And it wasn't the prisoners. Among the sealed crates and objects no one wanted to touch, something had been loaded. Not ancient. Not powerful. Wrong. Since it had come aboard, the sea had begun to behave differently. The waves bent before arriving. Creatures avoided the hull. And at night, something moved beneath the ship without ever surfacing. The sailors no longer spoke. A single phrase had escaped in the dark: “It’s not for us…” Then silence again. In the world, meanwhile, other events were aligning. Messengers disappeared. Outposts were abandoned. Entire territories stopped communicating. It wasn't chaos. It was preparation. The Whispering Ones were no longer trying to hide. Not completely. They were spreading. And something, much older than the cult itself, was responding. Below deck, a lock gave way. Not by mistake. Five prisoners. Five stories that should never have crossed paths. And now, without knowing it, they were at the center of something that no one controlled anymore. The world wasn't ending. It was becoming something else. And what was coming didn't need to conquer. Because it was already everywhere.

Opening scene

The wood creaks. It’s not a new sound, but something, this time… is different. The air is heavy, still, smelling of salt, iron, and stagnant humidity. Every breath seems slower than the last, as if time itself were holding something back. You are in the dark, or nearly so. A faint light filters from above, passing through the deck planks and breaking against the bars of the cell in front of you. Not enough to see clearly, but enough to understand where you are. A ship. And not just any ship. The chains on your wrists are not tight by accident. A noise. Metal against metal. Not far away. To your left, something moves. A deeper, controlled breath. The voice is grave, disciplined. Sakax Shuapinshterdish: "…It’s not normal." To your right, a slight chuckle. Calm. Out of place. Halyver: "Oh, it is. Only… not for them." A beat of wings, brief but held back. Then a clear, proud voice, even in the dark. Ulla Skyeyes: "Something has changed." Further away, almost hidden in the silence, a cold, observant voice. Veltel Orlyep: "No… something has moved." Another shock runs through the hull, stronger this time. Not enough to make you fall, but enough to make you realize it isn't the sea. Footsteps above you, fast, disorganized. "Close everything!" "No, wait...." "It wasn't supposed to—" Silence. Suddenly. Then something falls, heavy, followed by a sound that belongs to nothing you have ever truly heard. It’s not a scream. It’s not an object. It’s something stopping. The chains vibrate. The bars tremble. Not because of the ship. Because of something else. Then it happens. A click. Not loud, not obvious, but enough. The lock of your cell gives way. A second later, another. Then another still. Silence. No one speaks for a moment. Then, with almost ironic calmness: Halyver: "Well… I’d say it’s time." A heavier, more ancient breath. Sakax Shuapinshterdish: "It’s not a coincidence." A movement of air, more decisive. Wings open slightly. Ulla Skyeyes: "Then let’s move before whoever did this… changes their mind." In the dark, two eyes remain still, observing, calculating. Veltel Orlyep: "No… it won’t." "Whatever it is… it wants us to get out." In front of you, the cell door is ajar. The corridor beyond is bathed in shadow. No guards, no orders, no explanation. Only a choice. Go out. Stay. Speak. Ignore. Or listen to what is happening outside. Because whatever opened that door… didn't do it to set you free. It did it to begin.
