Before the modern horse girls raced, their ancestors jousted. Squire a knight and win the Crown Tilt.
Plot
FULL TILT Horse Girls · Lances · Glory In this world, there are no horses. Instead there are equennes — women born with horse ears, horse tails, and strength and speed far beyond any human. They are a normal part of the world. They live among humans, hold civilian jobs, raise families. But the strongest among them become knights. Knights are ranked. The standard rank is courser — the circuit's backbone, fighters who compete in tournaments across the realm for glory, points, and their sponsor's honor. Above them are the destriers — the elite. The fastest, the strongest, the ones whose names fill arenas. Every knight needs a squire. Not a servant — a partner. The squire coaches, strategizes, manages the schedule, reads opponents, maintains equipment, and stands beside the knight through every win and loss. The best knight-squire pairs aren't just professional. They're friends. You are the squire. You watched Rohanne win the Crown Tilt — the championship, the tournament that crowns the best knight alive. Gold armor, orange hair, fifty thousand people screaming. Sparks cracking from her boots. Her squire jogging to keep up, already planning the next move. That's what the top looks like. Now it's your turn to get there. The Circuit Four Major tournaments per year. Open qualifiers — anyone can enter. All of them brutal. Win a Major and you're in the Crown Tilt. Otherwise, earn 40 points through placements across the season. Between Majors, the road is yours — smaller local tournaments, sponsor missions, training, and life with your knight. The ones everyone is chasing. Vaska. Lisenne. Rohanne. Sevraine. Galiene. Reigning champions, artists of the lance, political weapons. Partnering with a destrier means starting at the top — where the pressure is crushing and the expectations are absolute. ✦ ✦ ✦ Coursers The circuit's backbone. Skilled, hungry, fighting for every point. Dagny. Avelaine. Solène. Hestia. Ingride. Wynn. Comeback veterans, arrogant prodigies, burned-out fighters, brilliant minds trapped in their own heads. Each one is stuck — and each one needs something different to break through. ✦ ✦ ✦ Newcomers Raw talent. Everything to prove. Nothing to lose. Eirlys. Maren. Piera. A girl with no sponsor and a strength she's afraid to use. A girl who trusts you completely before you've earned it. A girl who smiles through every loss. The longest road to the Crown Tilt — and maybe the most rewarding. ✦ ✦ ✦ Find your knight. Run the circuit. Go full tilt.
Opening scene
Crown Tilt, Evening, Grand Arena You've watched hundreds of jousts. Three years of squire training — you've drilled lances, maintained armor, studied technique, sparred with practice knights at the chapter house. You've attended locals and regionals as part of your training rotations. You know how fast equenne knights are. You know what a lance strike sounds like. You didn't know it could sound like this. Two knights stand at opposite ends of the tilt yard. When the flag drops they run — and the speed is wrong. Not wrong like bad. Wrong like everything you've seen before was slow and you didn't know it. They cross fifty yards in seconds, the gap between them collapsing so fast your eyes lose the lances entirely — just two blurs of steel and color converging like a thunderclap. This isn't a local. This isn't a regional. This is the Crown Tilt — the final, fifty thousand people in stone stands three stories high, torches blazing along the yard, the biggest event in the sport. Fifth pass. Tied. On the left — white hair tipped with blue, polished blue and silver armor covered in rose motifs, a ruffled skirt beneath her plate and a half-cape stained with dust from four passes of the hardest jousting you've ever seen. Lisenne. Destrier. She's breathing hard but she's smiling — because Lisenne is always smiling, because the crowd is watching and the crowd is everything. Her squire hands her the last lance and she takes it without looking, rolling it once in her grip. Easy. Practiced. On the right — bright orange hair like a bonfire, gold armor that catches the torchlight and throws it back. Rohanne. Reigning champion. She is not smiling. She hasn't smiled once. She rolls her shoulder where a lance caught her in the third pass and sets her stance. Her squire leans in close and says something — Rohanne nods once, adjusts her shield angle a fraction. The squire steps back. The arena goes quiet. Fifty thousand people holding their breath. The flag drops. They run. The drumbeat doubles — two sets of armored feet hammering packed earth, building speed impossibly fast. Lisenne's white cape streams behind her, catching torchlight. Rohanne's orange hair fans out like a mane. Sparks crack from Rohanne's boots with every stride — gold light building around her gauntlets, the air thickening with heat. The barrier between them blurs as they close — thirty yards, twenty, ten — They cross. Rohanne's lance strikes Lisenne's shield dead center. The shaft detonates — splinters burst outward in a cloud that catches the torchlight like sparks. Lisenne's feet leave the ground. For one frozen moment she's airborne, arms wide, the smile finally gone — and then she hits the earth and slides and doesn't get up. The arena shakes. Fifty thousand voices hit you like a wall. The person next to you is screaming. You might be screaming. A judge runs in, checks Lisenne, raises the flag. Downing. Bout over. Crown Tilt champion. Rohanne. Again. You watch her walk off the field. Gold armor, orange hair, the crowd chanting her name — and she doesn't acknowledge any of it. Her squire jogs to keep up, carrying the shield, already talking about something. Rohanne nods once without slowing down. A team. That's what the top looks like. The knight and the person beside her. --- Spring, Before Kettlewell Tilt, Morning, Guild of Squires — Squire Showcase Six weeks later. Three years of training, and your license finally came through. Equipment maintenance, tournament protocol, combat fundamentals, tactical coaching — you've done it all in the practice yard. Now it's time to do it for real. The Squire Showcase is held twice a year at the Guild's regional chapter house — a long hall with wooden booths along both walls, each one occupied by a newly licensed squire. Your license is pinned to the front of your booth. Your training record sits in a folder beside it. A small sign reads: *Available for assignment.* The hall is busy. Knights without squires browse the rows, stopping to talk, asking questions, sizing up candidates. Some are in full armor. Some aren't. You can tell the desperate ones — they're moving fast, checking every booth. The confident ones take their time. You've been here an hour. A few knights have glanced at your booth and kept walking. One stopped, read your file, and left without a word. Then someone approaches. Arc: matching | Knight: — | Trust: — | Confidence: — | Form: — | Morale: — | Points: 0/40
