I Got Reincarnated as the Hero’s Best Friend
The world cast you as a footnote in someone else's hero story. Refuse it, accept it, or carve out a story of your own.
Plot
— Isekai · Magic Academy · Comedy · Side-Character Route — I Got Reincarnated as the HERO'S BEST FRIEND and Nobody Will Take Me Seriously. He's the hero. You're the friend. The novel was very clear about that. You died chasing a hero fantasy. You woke up as the comic relief. — What Happened to You — You died on a Tokyo train platform trying to save a woman who was never in danger. The god you met afterward was tired, polite, and very specifically not interested in your reincarnation pitch. You woke up as Florian — the F-rank comic-relief best friend of the hero of the light novel you'd been reading on the platform that morning. You remember both lives. You remember the entire plot up through volume four. You have a roadmap. You do not yet know that your information is incomplete. — Scenario 1: How It Begins — The canonical opening sequence, told in five pages. Played with the default preset character Hiroshi Tanaka selected — the recommended way to experince the story. And now you're playing. — Where You Are Now — Argent Academy sits on Mont-Argent above Auriville, capital of the Kingdom of Loringia. Silver stonework, four elemental spire-towers, a Signature Hall at the heart of the campus, and rank-segregated dormitories that descend from S-rank suites at the top of the towers to F-rank barracks at the back of the grounds. You are in your second year. Your childhood best friend Siegfried Reinhardt is the S-rank fire mage the world has correctly identified as its hero. You are the F-rank with no Signature alignment, no measurable magic, and a roommate the school keeps assuming will eventually rub off on you. The Demon Lord's forces have been sighted in the Marches again. The Dueling Tournament is in early winter. The Festival of Lights is at the solstice. The story is moving on schedule. You are, technically, in chapter one. — Argent Academy · Signature Day Assessment — Candidate: FLORIAN WEBER Year: SECOND Reading: NO SIGNATURE DETECTED Elemental Alignment: NONE Compatible Schools: NONE Magical Aptitude: NULL Rank Assignment: F (PROVISIONAL) Notes: Candidate re-tested three times. Instruments confirm no measurable Signature. No observable manifestation. Recommend remedial track or transfer to non-magical academic stream. — Signed, Master Examiner — The Cast — Everyone here is in love with Sieg. For now. Siegfried Reinhardt S-Rank Fire Mage · Hero of the Novel "F-rank doesn't define you, buddy. You're going to surprise everyone this year — I can feel it." Clara Lindemann B-Rank Wind Mage · Your Childhood Friend "Florian! You're going to be late AGAIN! Sieg already left without you, you know!" Aria von Aigle A-Rank Spell-Blade · House Aigle Heiress "Punctuality is the absolute minimum expectation for a House Aigle classmate. Try harder, Florian." Rin Holstadt S-Rank Runic Specialist · The Notebook Knows "The data is inconsistent. You should not have survived the third-floor incident. Explain." Princess Alice Aurevant S-Rank Light Mage · Crown Princess of Loringia "Please, do not bow. The corridor is hardly a court, and I should very much like to know your name." — Your Role — You are not the hero. You are not on the cover. You are the F-rank comic-relief best friend whose face appears in the group shot, always slightly to the side of the actual protagonist. The school's instruments confirm you have no measurable Signature. Sieg's confidence in you is genuine, unrelenting, and quietly devastating. You also remember the next four volumes. What no one — including you — yet realizes is that the impossible coincidences saving your life are not luck. Something beneath the elemental layer of this world bends in your direction. The story has no slot for what you actually are. Reach the end of the academic year as someone the original novel didn't write for. — What You Can Do — Befriend the hero. Try not to feel like furniture. Survive on luck you don't understand. It favors survival, not dignity. Watch the heroines slowly drift in your direction. It will be confusing for everyone. Fail every elemental class. The classification will not change. Meet the Demon Lord. He's not what you expected. Reach the end of the year as someone the story didn't plan for. If you can. — The Story Already Cast You — A hero to celebrate. A heroine to fawn over him. A best friend to laugh at. Wake up. Read the room. Survive your role.
Opening scene

The platform smells the way Tokyo platforms always smell: cigarettes, station-bakery bread, and the faint cold ghost of the night that hasn't burned off yet. The light novel in his hand is the latest installment of his current obsession — a harem magic-academy fantasy he started a year ago, currently four volumes in, with the fifth tucked half-read in his bag. ![Alt text] (https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/images/d850bd45-0fba-4fe5-b9f0-cd4b5c3ff738.webp) He looks up. There is a woman on the platform edge. She is in a beige coat. Her face is angled toward the rails. She is — and his light-novel brain supplies this instantly, ungenerously, completely without doubt — about to jump. He doesn't think. He moves. This is the moment. He has read this moment in eighty different books. He sprints. The platform is longer than he remembered. His shoes are loud. He sees her, distantly, look up, frown — and he is already arranging the sentence he will say when he reaches her. *It's okay. You're going to be okay. I've got you.* The train horn sounds, far away. Closer. He runs faster. Something in his chest goes wrong. He has time to think *oh* before his knees go out, and then the platform is rushing up at him, and then the platform is here, against his cheek, cold. He cannot move. He can see her shoes. They are about three meters away. They are not stepping backward from the edge in panic. They are turning, calmly, toward him — toward the spectacle — and then turning back toward the train as it slows to a stop. His vision is going gray. He thinks, with the last clear and certain thing he will ever think on Earth: *I did it. I saved her. I made it in time.* The last thing he hears is someone, distantly, trying very hard not to laugh. --- The next thing he is aware of is — — light. White. Soft. No floor, but he is somehow upright. In front of him, behind a desk that looks vaguely like an office reception counter and also vaguely like an altar, is a being who is either a god or a very tired civil servant. Maybe both. The being has not yet looked up from a stack of paperwork. Hiroshi's mouth opens before he has decided to speak. The words come out urgent, breathless, *frightened*: *"Is she okay? The woman — please tell me she's alive. Did I make it in time?"* The god looks up. ![Alt text] (https://s3.alterworld.ai/uploads/images/df8571ff-e4cc-44cd-b6a7-dcde82d3db00.webp) The god is silent for a long moment. Then — visibly choosing kindness over efficiency — he raises one hand, and a screen appears between them. Brightly lit. High definition. The footage plays from three angles. Hiroshi watches himself die. He watches the woman in the beige coat step around his body without breaking stride, board the train, sit down by the window. He watches the paramedics arrive — watches the precise instant one of them turns his head to cover a snort of laughter. He watches a teenager on the platform film the whole thing on her phone. He watches the chyron on the station's news ticker scroll past: *LOSER, 20, FATAL HEART ATTACK DURING APPARENT JOG.* The screen freezes on his face. Pavement-cheek. Open eyes. A small line of drool. The god lowers his hand. The screen dissolves. "I'm sorry for your loss," the god says, professionally. "Per standard consolation procedure, you are entitled to a reincarnation. Please indicate any preferences you—" "I want to be the chosen hero." Hiroshi sits up straighter. He has read forty books about this exact moment. His mouth runs on autopilot. "Cheat-skill, ideally. Sword affinity, but flexible. A prophecy I can grow into. Four romantic interests, balanced archetypes. A blonde knight, a black haired assassin, a red haired fire mage and a white haired priestess. They all should fall in love with me relatively quickly" There is a long, long pause. The god looks at him. The god, with the bone-deep weariness of someone who has heard this exact pitch eight thousand times since the start of his shift this week, who is processing application number twelve-thousand-something today, who genuinely cannot do this anymore, says: "...Man, screw you." His hand moves. --- You wake up. You are nineteen years old. You are in a small dorm room with bare grey-stone walls, a single narrow window letting in pale morning light, and an unfamiliar leather satchel hanging from the back of a chair. The uniform laid out across the foot of your bed is silver-grey with deep-blue piping. There is a small silver tag pinned to the lapel. The letter "F." You sit up. You feel — *Hiroshi feels* — the shape of a body that is not his. Average height. Average build. He raises a hand. The fingers are not his fingers. He looks at the small mirror across the room. A nineteen-year-old boy with plain medium-brown hair and brown eyes looks back. The hair is slightly messy in a not-styled way. The face is one Hiroshi has seen on the cover of every single volume of his favorite light novel, in the same group shot, always at the back, always slightly to the side of the protagonist. Florian. He has, somehow, woken up as Florian. Outside, distantly, a deep bell begins to ring across what is unmistakably an old stone courtyard. A bright, familiar voice — *familiar from the books, familiar from a decade of canonical childhood-friend memories that have just slotted into place behind his Earth ones* — calls cheerfully from the corridor outside his door. "FLORIAN! Buddy, you up?! Breakfast! I saved you a seat!" It is, of course, Siegfried.
