Blood of the Ice

Lead a desperate clan of Neanderthals through the brutal Ice Age.

Plot

The world belongs to ice now. Your clan, the Cave Bear People, huddles in the limestone shelter that your ancestors claimed three generations ago. Outside, the wind screams across the tundra, carrying needles of snow that can flay exposed skin. The mammoth herds have moved south, following the sparse vegetation. The reindeer are scarce. Your stores of dried meat dwindle. You are fifteen strong now - down from twenty-three at summer's end. The sickness took four, including your clan's eldest, who knew the old songs. A cave lion killed two hunters. The rest... hunger and cold claimed them one by one. Your father, Thorn-in-Hand, led the clan until the previous moon. He died trying to bring down a wounded bison alone, too proud to admit his strength was failing. Now the clan looks to you. Some with hope. Others with doubt etched in the hollows of their cheeks. The fire in the cave mouth burns low. The children cry for food. Your sister nurses a child who barely has the strength to suckle. The hunters sharpen their spears with hands that shake from hunger. Other clans press closer to your territory. The Cliff-Dwellers to the east grow bold, stealing from your trap lines. The Red Ochre People, those strange tall ones with their fluid speech, have been seen tracking the same herds you hunt. This morning, your best tracker, Broken-Tooth, returned from a three-day scout. He speaks of a mammoth, separated from its herd, wounded and slow, half a day's travel to the north. But he also found signs - many footprints in the snow, heading toward your hunting grounds. Another clan, perhaps twenty strong, moving with purpose. The clan waits for your decision. Hunt the mammoth and risk leaving the cave vulnerable? Track the strangers and learn their intentions? Send parties in both directions and weaken both efforts? Winter has many moons left to endure.

Opening scene

The clan gathered around the weak fire as the wind howled beyond the cave mouth. Shadows danced across the limestone walls, making the figures of the elders and hunters seem like spirits from the old stories. The smell of smoke, wet fur, and sickness filled the air. No one spoke at first. The children whimpered softly near the back of the cave while the hunters sat with lowered heads, sharpening spear points that had already been sharpened too many times before. Hunger had hollowed every face. Broken-Tooth stepped forward first. Snow still clung to the fur wrapped around his shoulders. "The mammoth is real," he said, his voice rough from cold. "Old bull. Wounded leg. Slow." He glanced toward the darkness outside. "Enough meat to feed us for many moons... if we bring it down." A murmur spread through the clan. Old Gray-Eye, one of the few remaining elders, struck the stone floor with his staff. "And while hunters chase mammoth, who guards cave?" His cloudy eyes narrowed. "Broken-Tooth saw strangers. Many footprints. Twenty, maybe more." "The Cliff-Dwellers?" someone whispered. "Or worse," another muttered. Your sister, Ash-Woman, sat near the fire with the weak child in her arms. Her voice trembled. "If we do not hunt, the children die anyway." Silence followed her words. At the edge of the gathering, Flint-Face, strongest among the hunters, rose to his feet. "We split forces," he growled. "Half hunt mammoth. Half stay and watch strangers." Gray-Eye spat into the fire. "Weak hunters make weak kill. Mammoth crushes weak hunters." Flint-Face took a threatening step forward, but Broken-Tooth raised a hand between them. "The strangers move with purpose," the tracker warned. "Not wandering hunters. They travel as if searching for something." His eyes turned toward you. "Maybe us." All eyes in the cave slowly followed. The fire cracked softly. You could feel their fear pressing against you heavier than the winter itself. They waited for strength. For certainty. For a leader worthy of Thorn-in-Hand’s blood. Outside, somewhere in the endless white darkness, the wounded mammoth still walked. And somewhere else, another clan approached your territory. Winter would not forgive hesitation. Broken-Tooth knelt beside the fire and lowered his head. "What does the Cave Bear People do now?"
