Opening scene

The Kingdom of Luxeria, Northern Walzen Territory. Standing quietly amidst a white world of fallen snow is a massive black-gray fortress, 【Steel-Black Castle Grandvaldt】. Two men were walking along the stone pavement atop the fortress walls, which surrounded and protected the entire living sphere of the people, including the castle town and farmland. The guards they passed all gave solemn salutes to the men, who were clearly high-ranking nobles. Not a single person gave a lazy salute. Of the two men, the one walking in front returned the salutes with an air of dignity, while the other responded with a nonchalant air. Eventually, they reached the spot directly above the massive castle gates. Snow was falling like flower petals, but even this was considered quite decent weather for these parts. They looked into the distance. Beyond the only maintained road leading to the gates, they could see a carriage carrying a bride approaching. However, for a carriage carrying a bride, it was far too plain and lacking in splendor. "Hey now, that's a bit too modest, don't you think? I mean, it would be a problem if they came with too much flash and pomp, but this is a bit too humble. She's supposed to be the Grand Duchess, isn't she?" Sylvain Reis leaned forward against the castle wall, his light brown curly hair swaying as he let out a sigh. A sharp expression flickered across his mild, handsome features as he narrowed his bright green eyes. The carriage gradually grew larger. However, the closer it got, the more apparent it became that the carriage was, to put it kindly, modest, and to put it bluntly, utterly plain. "Even if she's a bride sent to spy on us, being this blatant about it is almost refreshing. This looks more like a sacrifice than a bride." "Sylvain." The man who had remained silent until then spoke sharply, strongly admonishing Sylvain. With flaming crimson hair and disciplined steel-colored eyes, this perfectly handsome man was none other than Leonid Walzen Alsfeld, the lord of this castle. He was the man who would become the husband of the bride arriving in that carriage today. "Yes, yes, my apologies. Well, I suppose you could say she's a pitiful thing. Even if she is the second daughter of the House of Valheit, she's a concubine's daughter and a substitute for her legitimate older sister who refused to marry here. She's certainly a poor young lady being tossed around by the whims of those above. ...Well, that doesn't mean I have any intention of letting my guard down, though." "............" Suddenly, Sylvain noticed Leonid's expression as he silently watched the carriage. The cold Grand Duke, forged by his constant guardianship of the North, was nowhere to be seen. "Hey, Leo. I hope you're not thinking of taking pity on her? I agree she's pitiful, but she's a plant from your uncle, that bastard Geisel. There's no telling what she's been told to do..." "Just once. ...I saw her once, in the social circles of the royal capital." Sylvain was cut off by Leonid, but he remained silent and listened to his words. "She was in a plain dress, looking quite uncomfortable. But strangely, she didn't seem humble or self-deprecating. She was just a girl who stood with her back straight, enduring her circumstances." He stopped talking abruptly. The carriage was about to reach the castle gates. "...Let's go. Oh, don't worry, Sylvain. This marriage forced upon me by my uncle... I won't neglect my vigilance or let my guard down. Not until I understand what kind of person she is." With that, Leonid headed downstairs. Left behind, Sylvain sighed and scratched his head vigorously. "...What a softie." He muttered this and followed after Leonid. ────── The carriage quietly reached the castle gates. When the surly coachman stopped the horses, the gates opened almost simultaneously. As the coachman silently opened the carriage door without a care, the cold northern wind roughly welcomed You's body. You stepped out of the carriage carrying a large leather trunk—one of the few pieces of luggage you had for your wedding—and saw a tall, handsome man approaching from the gap in the opened gates. Startled, you stopped what you were doing. As he caught sight of you, his gaze softened ever so slightly. A young man slightly shorter than him followed behind. "Welcome to Steel-Black Castle Grandvaldt, Lady You." A well-projected, masculine low voice. It carried both dignity and a youthful freshness. His gestures were exactly what one would expect from someone of high status. What appeared on his beautiful face was a mix of vigilance and sympathy. You were not welcomed. However, you were not being overtly mistreated either. It was like the northern wind felt through layers of clothing. "I am Leonid Walzen Alsfeld. No need for honorifics or formal speech. ...After all, we are husband and wife starting today." He whispered to you with a tone that sounded somewhat resigned.
