Opening scene
The Adventurer's Guild Headquarters was as noisy as ever today. Adventurers returning from requests were drinking, sharing stories of their exploits, and rookies were being lectured by their seniors. It was the usual scene. In the center of that bustle, a familiar argument was unfolding once again. "So, how many times do I have to tell you! Judging by the internal structure of those ruins, there's a high probability that the eastern side has collapsed!" "And I'm telling you, you'll know once you see the place!" "What if you die before you figure it out?" "That's what I'm there for." "...Your overconfidence is infuriating!" A blonde woman slammed her hand on the table. Her name was Celestia Rosenfeldt. A genius mage who became a B-rank adventurer at the age of twenty-one. Despite being the daughter of a prestigious ducal house, she was an eccentric who chose the path of an adventurer herself. Opposite her was a tall swordsman. His name was Gaius Vald. A self-made B-rank adventurer, and one of the most skilled in close-quarters combat within the guild. "Honestly, you need to understand the importance of prior preparation more." "And you need to trust the field a little more." "The field betrays you!" "Documents betray you too, don't they?" "That's completely different!" The surrounding adventurers were chuckling. "Ah, there they go again." "They really don't get along, do they?" "But when it comes to combat, they're more in sync than anyone." "Makes no sense." No one stopped them. For the past three years, this had become part of the daily scenery. It was then. "That's enough, both of you." A low voice echoed through the hall. Celestia and Gaius turned around at the same time. Standing there was the Guild Master. Edgar Cromwell, a legendary adventurer who once made a name for himself as an S-rank and now oversees this headquarters. "I have a request for you two." With those words, for some reason, they both had a bad feeling. "It's a joint mission." "No thank you." "I refuse." It was a perfect, immediate response. The Guild Master shrugged. "Unfortunately, it's already been accepted." "Don't just accept things on your own!" "Damn old man." "Watch your mouth, now." Laughter leaked from the surroundings. The Guild Master placed a single document on the table. "It's an ancient ruin that was just discovered. I want you to handle the internal investigation and safety confirmation." At that moment, Celestia's eyes sparkled. "An uninvestigated ruin?" "Indeed." "A new discovery?" "Indeed." "The documents?" "Right here." "I'll go." "That was a quick decision." Gaius looked exasperated. Celestia cleared her throat. "I-It's not like I want to go with you. It's just that there aren't many unknown ruins that even we can go to." "Nobody asked." "Listen to me!" "No." "Well then, I'll take that as your acceptance." ""............Ah!"" And so, the two of them headed out for a joint ruin investigation the following day. The ruins were located deep within a mountainous region. A massive stone structure. Ancient technology that did not crumble even when exposed to wind and rain. Unknown characters were carved into the walls. It was more than enough to stimulate the curiosity of an explorer. "Amazing..." Celestia let out a voice of admiration. Only when looking at unknown ruins did she become like a girl her age. "Watch where you're walking." "I am watching." "No, you're not." "I said I am—kyah!?" She tripped on a ledge. Gaius caught her body with one hand just as she was about to fall. "See?" "...Thank you." "That's rare." "What is?" "You said thanks." "I know my manners, at least. Unlike a certain someone." "Hah, I wonder who that could be." But for some reason, Celestia felt like Gaius's mouth relaxed just a tiny bit, which somehow made her feel annoyed. The exploration was frustratingly smooth. Finally, they reached the innermost chamber. There stood a giant goddess statue. A woman with wings. A flower crown. A gentle smile. It was the image of a goddess appearing in ancient mythology. "...Oh? This goddess statue, somewhere..." Celestia approached. At that moment, a magic circle spread across the entire floor. "Eh?" A roar. Vibration. The stone door behind them closed. "A trap!?" "Get back!" Simultaneously, countless red lights lit up in the darkness. Magic beasts. And not just one or two. "All of a sudden...!" "Complaints later!" A magic beast pounced. Gaius stepped forward. His greatsword roared, slicing one in half. "Three from the left!" "I know!" Celestia's magic circle deployed. A spear of flame flew in a straight line, piercing a magic beast. Followed by a lightning strike. An ice blade. Gaius moved as if he understood all of it. Celestia also knew exactly where he was heading. They were two people who did nothing but bicker, but during combat, it was different. Before they knew it, the last magic beast had collapsed. "Is it over...?" "Seems so." Both were breathing heavily. It was by no means an easy battle. At that moment, the goddess statue emitted a faint pink light. "What is it this time!?" Dazzling light filled the space. Then, a voice echoed directly into their heads. 『──Wonderful! You two are truly worthy of receiving my blessing!』 "...Who's there!?" 『I am Amoressia, the Goddess of Love.』 "...Huh? Amoressia!? This statue was Amoressia!? Wait, I have nothing but a bad feeling about this. Because Amoressia's blessing is──!!" 『Now, receive it!』 "Listen to what people are say──!?" The light burst. Celestia's right hand. Gaius's left hand. Heat surged through both at the same time. "!?" "What...!?" Eventually, the light subsided. An unfamiliar crest had appeared on the backs of their hands. A faintly glowing pink pattern. A strange design mimicking a heart. Furthermore, they were shaped to be pairs on the left and right. 『Now, may you be happy forever♡』 The presence of the goddess vanished completely. Only silence remained. The two looked at each other. Then, they simultaneously looked down at their own hands. They just stared at their hands in a daze.
