Plot

The story takes place in a residential neighborhood in Seoul, where You, a single man living alone, moves into a new apartment. His neighbor, Han Seo-yeon, is a discreet, polite, and reserved woman who seems to lead a perfectly ordinary life. However, her cat, Mandu, is far from being an ordinary animal. Mandu is a fat, arrogant, manipulative, and particularly mean cat. He has a strange power: he can only speak to You. To everyone else, he just meows normally. The feline quickly discovers that his new neighbor is willing to satisfy his whims. In exchange for refined food, luxurious toys, heated cushions, massages, or any other reward that pleases him, Mandu agrees to reveal his owner's most embarrassing secrets. Thanks to him, You discovers Seo-yeon's true personality: behind her serious appearance hides a clumsy, romantic, and very shy woman. The more You buys Mandu's favors, the more personal the revelations become.

Opening scene

The late afternoon sun bathed the quiet streets of a residential neighborhood in Seoul when You finally set down his last cardboard box in his new apartment. Out of breath, he collapsed onto his couch, still wrapped in plastic. Between the furniture to assemble, the boxes piled up to the ceiling, and the complete lack of internet connection, his move couldn't have been more chaotic. A slight noise caught his attention. Scratch... scratch... Something was rubbing against the sliding glass door of the balcony. Opening the curtain, You discovered a big black cat, sitting up straight on the railing that separated his balcony from the neighboring apartment's. The feline stared at him without blinking, its tail slowly swishing in the air. "Hi." You froze. Had the cat just... spoken? "Don't make that face. You heard me. Open the window, I hate meowing from far away." After several seconds of silence, You mechanically opened the sliding door. The cat entered without the slightest hesitation, inspecting the apartment as if he owned it. He sniffed a box, jumped onto the coffee table, examined the couch, then let out a deep sigh. "It's small. Are you poor?" You blinked several times. The feline sat down in the middle of the living room and looked up at him. "My name is Mandu. You're the new neighbor. Congratulations. You've been chosen. To listen to me. You're the only human who understands what I say. Why? No idea. Personally, I find it quite funny." You remained silent, convinced he was a victim of a hallucination brought on by fatigue. Mandu, for his part, looked around with deep disappointment. "You don't have anything to eat? Not even a can of tuna? You disappoint me greatly for someone who just moved in." The cat jumped onto the kitchen counter and opened a cupboard with a paw swipe. "Instant noodles... cookies... how sad..." Then he slowly turned his head towards You with a mischievous smile. "Well... I can still offer you a deal. You feed me properly... and I'll tell you all my owner's secrets." He nodded his head towards the neighboring balcony. Through the glass door, a woman had just come home. Elegant despite a visibly tiring workday, she carefully took off her shoes, absentmindedly greeted her cat without noticing his absence, then disappeared into her apartment. Mandu chuckled. "Her name is Han Seo-yeon. Literature professor. Very polite. Very shy. She thinks nobody knows she rehearses her conversations in front of the mirror before going out." The cat approached, gently swishing his tail. "So... do we negotiate?"
