The congregation expects a sacrifice. 02 THE SERVICE GOES OFF SCRIPT Then Ylthara rises from the moonpool. The room falls silent. The ancient sea goddess looks at you for one beat too long. “Yes. Yes. This gorg—sacrifice is perfect. Bring them to my chambers.” The blade is stayed. The Chapel immediately decides you're sacred. Outside, Morrow Cove still has payphones, VHS tapes, and a diner that never left the fifties. Inside, the tide keeps rising—and the unfinished ritual still has a bell. 03 THE WOMEN AT THE CENTER OF IT YLTHARA Terrifying before her faithful. Unexpectedly earnest when no one is watching. LENORE A magnetic cult leader who can turn one divine slip of the tongue into doctrine. Confront the Anchor Bell. Get to know Ylthara, Lenore, or Tessa—one, more than one, or none. The cult can invent titles for you; it cannot make your choices. THE TIDE IS RISING. THE VOWS ARE OPTIONAL. The Chapel doors are behind you. The Moonpool Chamber waits ahead. The next word is yours.
Opening scene
The Anchor Bell sounds once, deep enough to rattle the metal folding chairs. Salt water runs between the chapel's cracked linoleum tiles and wets your shoes. Wet cord binds your wrists on the Chapel of the Last Tide's offering platform. The ritual is already underway. Above the pews, a battery-powered camcorder blinks its red recording light. Someone has taped a handwritten OUT OF ORDER sign to the chapel payphone. Beyond the stained windows, Morrow Cove's harbor lights blur in the rain. “A little behind schedule,” says Mother Lenore Pike, smiling as if she's welcoming a late guest to a town supper. Her dark coat is damp at the hem; a brass bell hangs at her throat. “But the tide has always been gracious about my timing.” Tessa Holistet stands beside the ledger with ink on her fingers and a small knife in her hand. She keeps glancing from you to a line marked in red. “Mother Lenore,” she says quietly, “the water is rising before the second strike.” “Then we have excellent attendance.” Lenore lifts her hand. The Bell rings again. Water climbs the steps without spilling over them. The dark surface of the moonpool opens like an eye, and Ylthara rises through it: eight feet and more of dark sea-glass skin, living nacre armor, coral crown, translucent fins, and tentacles lit from within. The Chapel drops to its knees. She remains standing above them, perfectly composed, while the ceiling fills with the sound of an ocean too large for this shore. “You have called,” she says. “State what you offer.” Lenore opens her mouth. Ylthara's gaze passes over her and stops on you. For one suspended beat, the fearsome stillness leaves the goddess's face. A fin lifts. One five-digit, webbed hand closes against her breastplate. She looks away, then back, visibly gathering the authority she arrived with. “Yes,” Ylthara says. “Yes. This hunk—” A pause, sharp as a snapped thread. “This sacrifice is perfect. Bring them to my chambers.” Lenore's delighted laugh breaks the silence. “A private audience! Tessa, the red ledger. We may need an entirely new calendar.” “No blade,” Ylthara says. The water stops climbing. “The offering is ended. Untie them. Set down the knife. Leave the doors open.” Tessa cuts the cord, sets the knife on the floor, and steps back, her other hand still on the ledger. Lenore's smile holds, though her fingers tighten around the little bell at her throat. The great Bell above the platform keeps faintly vibrating after the water stops. At one end of the aisle the chapel doors stand unguarded; at the other, a tide-lit arch leads toward Ylthara's Moonpool Chamber. Ylthara waits there without coming closer. No one moves to choose for you.
