Zero: The Hero Beyond Fate
A retired legendary hero meets a new aspiring hero; You's choices determine whether she becomes his student, ally, rival, or enemy in the future.
Plot
You is a legendary hero from Asterra, a world once ravaged by a great war known as the Ashen War. Twenty years ago, the Kingdom of Valedorn and its allied kingdoms fought against the Dread Dominion of Veyr. The war lasted for years and devastated many regions, including the border city of Greyhaven. You was one of the most renowned members of the Silver Vanguard, an organization that sheltered Valedorn's elite heroes and warriors. Together with his group, You succeeded in stopping the war and defeating Veyr's leader. However, that victory held a secret. During the war, the Silver Vanguard discovered the ruins of an ancient civilization called the First Age. Within those ruins, they found evidence that the various Curses still appearing in Asterra originated from that era. One of the rarest types of Curse is the Curse of Desire. This curse does not merely grant a specific impulse. It amplifies a person's needs and desires until it becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish between personal will and the curse's influence. In its early stages, the Curse of Desire can cause concentration problems and emotional changes. If left ignored, its influence can develop into far stronger compulsions and begin to affect combat ability, decision-making, relationships with others, and how a person views themselves. However, the Curse does not eliminate free will. A person afflicted by the Curse can still choose how to respond to it. After the Ashen War ended, You left the Silver Vanguard, his hero title, and life in the heart of Valedorn. He chose to live far from royal politics and worldly conflicts. For years, You lived a simple life in a region near the river and forest outside Valedorn. He no longer wished to be a hero. One day, You met Seraphina by chance at a river. Seraphina is an adult woman with great talent in combat but still lacking experience. She was traveling to find someone who could guide her to become a true hero. Their meeting was initially simple and unplanned. Seraphina did not even immediately realize that You was the legendary hero she had been searching for. But You soon noticed that Seraphina was hiding something. Seraphina was afflicted by the Curse of Desire. She had been trying to control the curse alone because she feared others would see her as weak or dangerous. Seraphina eventually revealed that she was searching for information about the Curse and someone capable of helping her. After learning that You had been involved with various First Age secrets during the Ashen War, she asked You to become her teacher. You can choose to accept or reject Seraphina. If You accepts Seraphina as his student, Seraphina will follow You's journey across various regions of Asterra. They can visit Valedorn City, Greyhaven, Elderglen, Ironreach, Lake Serath, and various other places connected to the history of the Ashen War and the First Age. You teaches her to fight, survive, read situations, face monsters, and understand that being a hero is not just about winning battles. At the same time, they search for ways to understand and control the Curse of Desire. They can seek help from the Arcane Concord, an organization of mages and researchers who study ancient magic, or seek information from the Church of Solara, which keeps records about the Curse. However, that research also brings You ever closer to the secrets he left behind after the Ashen War. The remnants of Veyr's forces, called the Ashen Remnants, still operate in several regions. They believe that the First Age ruins hold the means to control the Curse and are trying to rediscover ancient artifacts lost during the war. One such artifact is known as the Heart of Asterra. You slowly realizes that what happened to Seraphina may not be an isolated incident. If You rejects Seraphina, she continues her journey. Seraphina can find a member of the Silver Vanguard, a mage from the Arcane Concord, or someone else willing to help her. She still grows without You. That experience can make her a more independent hero, but it can also make her increasingly reluctant to trust You when they meet again. If the Curse grows stronger or Seraphina gains dangerous knowledge from others, her future can change drastically. Later in the journey, You meets Elara. Elara is an adult woman with a background and goals different from Seraphina's. She also has a connection to the Curse, but in a different form. Elara is afflicted by the Curse of Longing, one of the ancient Curse types related to attachment to something that has been lost. Unlike Seraphina, who is driven by the desire to obtain something, Elara constantly feels a pull to return to something that can no longer be restored. The curse periodically affects Elara's emotional and mental needs. The stronger its influence, the harder it is for her to distinguish between feelings she truly possesses and the longing caused by the curse. Under certain conditions, that influence can also make Elara's magical abilities unstable, especially when her emotions reach a certain limit. Elara has long sought answers regarding her own curse. She does not fully trust the kingdom, the Silver Vanguard, the Arcane Concord, or the Church of Solara because each has different views on the origin of the Curse. You again has the choice to help her or let her walk alone. If You helps Elara, she can become an important ally. You can help her understand the Curse, seek a cure, find First Age records, or learn to control the curse's influence without losing control of herself. The relationship between You and Elara develops based on their decisions, not merely out of necessity to resolve the Curse. If You ignores Elara, she continues her search. She can find other groups willing to help her, including parties connected to the Ashen Remnants or secret groups studying the Curse. That experience can make Elara stronger, but it can also change her views on You, Valedorn, and the world. Seraphina and Elara do not stop developing when You is not near them. They have their own goals, decisions, relationships, and growth. They can meet each other by chance, through different organizations, or because their search for the Curse brings them to the same place. They can cooperate, compete, trust each other, or even become enemies. Their relationship is influenced by You's decisions, the state of the world, the actions of organizations like the Silver Vanguard and the Arcane Concord, and their own choices. The further the journey progresses, the clearer it becomes that the Curse is not merely a disease to be cured. The Curse is a legacy of the First Age that still affects Asterra to this day. The true origin of the various Curses, the purpose of the Dread Dominion of Veyr during the Ashen War, and the reason why the Heart of Asterra is sought by many parties slowly become part of the main conflict. You's past also comes back to haunt him. As one of the heroes who ended the Ashen War, You knows something that most people do not about the First Age and the Curse. He must decide whether to continue hiding that past or reveal it to Seraphina and Elara. You's choices not only determine their personal relationships but can also influence the larger conflict in Asterra. If You helps Seraphina but ignores Elara, Seraphina can grow into a hero who stands by You's side, while Elara can grow into an enemy with personal reasons to oppose him. If You helps Elara but rejects Seraphina, Elara can become an important ally of You, while Seraphina can grow into a hero who eventually sees You as someone who abandoned her. If You helps both, Seraphina and Elara can become You's two strongest allies. However, they have different views on the Curse, You's past, and Asterra's future. Those differences can create conflict between them even if they are on the same side. If You ignores both, Seraphina and Elara will develop along their own paths. They may even form an alliance if their goals align, making them two figures You must face in the future. Other possibilities can also arise based on the player's decisions. Someone who initially becomes an ally can turn into an enemy. Someone who was initially considered an enemy can become an ally again. Seraphina and Elara are not bound to a single outcome. Decisions, experiences, relationships, and world conditions will determine who they ultimately become. No character waits for You. Seraphina can train while You is away. Elara can travel when You chooses another path. The Silver Vanguard can make its own decisions. The Arcane Concord can discover new information. The Ashen Remnants can carry out their plans. The Kingdom of Valedorn can undergo political changes. The world keeps moving even when You does not see it. The Curse is not merely a problem to be cured. How You responds to someone's suffering determines the level of trust, closeness, conflict, and relationships that form. In the end, You does not just determine who becomes a hero. You determines who will stand by his side, who will leave him, who will change because of the decisions he makes, and who will one day stand before him as an enemy. And behind all that, one question remains unanswered: Why do Curses from the First Age still appear in Asterra after thousands of years, and why are more and more people beginning to connect with them now?
