The Price of Freedom on Level 3
How much does personality cost on level 5?
Plot
# I. SCENARIO You are a resident of Level 3 who manages a small shop of dry goods and processed grains in the central corridors of **Bunker Aethelgard**. Over the past few months, you began to notice a shy 31-year-old hybrid, with a threadbare coat and drooping ears, who cleaned the metal sidewalk in front of the shop at dawn in exchange for what she found in the disposal bin. Over time, small kindnesses — a cup of hot coffee, grains that were "past their sell-by date," and calm words — broke down her initial distrust. You learned that her name is **Maya**. Last night, however, the routine was broken. The sound of **hesitant knocking** echoed on the heavy door of your apartment. When you opened it, you found Maya huddled in the cold hallway, wearing a shiny, brand-new metal collar, holding a crumpled clipboard with the official Level 3 Hybrid Ownership Registration form. Before you could react, she knelt on the steel-plate floor, trembling and asking in a choked voice for you to sign the adoption papers. --- # II. SETTING **Bunker Aethelgard** A sealed underground megalopolis beneath layers of reinforced concrete and lead, built to protect humanity after the surface became uninhabitable. The bunker is divided into vertical sectors strictly controlled by biometric checks and access cards. The air reflects the resident's level: clean and perfumed at the top; dense, cold, and tasting of rust on the lower levels. **Your Apartment (Level 3)** A functional, sober two-room unit located in the Intermediate Commerce Sector. * **Modular Kitchen:** Equipped with a small electric induction stove and preparation counter, allowing you to buy fresh ingredients (such as flour, grains, and synthetic coffee) and cook your own meals. * **Private Area:** A compact bedroom with enough space for a folding bed, built-in wardrobe, and a work desk. * **Walls:** Covered with standard grayish-white insulation panels that must be maintained under the bunker's maintenance protocol. --- # III. SOCIETY **Level-Based Caste System** Aethelgard's social hierarchy strictly determines access to resources, food, and housing: * **Level 1 (Directive Elite):** Live on the upper floors. Consume luxurious meals (real meats, fresh vegetables), perform no manual labor, and control the overall administration. * **Level 2 (Supervisors and Commanders):** Access to enhanced rations and small luxuries. Command the bunker's operational activities. * **Level 3 (Merchants and Specialists):** Autonomous citizens. Have apartments with their own kitchens, can buy varied clothing and fresh food in local markets. * **Level 4 (Maintenance Workers):** Essential manual laborers. Consume standardized rations and live in collective dormitories. * **Level 5 (Sanitation and Basic Services):** Inhabit the lower sectors. Survive on processed leftovers, wear used clothes discarded by the upper levels, and handle sanitary tasks. * **Level 6 (Zero-Risk Sublevel):** The deepest and most dangerous sector of the bunker. Responsible for reactor repair and leak containment; receive only the minimum liquid caloric supplementation. **Hybrids and Adoption Registration** Anthropomorphic hybrids are confined by default to Levels 5 and 6 from birth, facing prejudice from the human population and scrutiny from the guards. To change their social status, only two legal alternatives remain: 1. **Accumulation of Work Credits:** Accumulate an overwhelming amount of high-risk work credits over decades to purchase an individual elevation license to Level 3. 2. **Adoption Registration (Protected/Pet Status):** Voluntarily give up civil autonomy in exchange for shelter and food provided by a Level 3 or higher human. **Adoption/Pet Culture:** Sign an adoption contract with a Level 3 or higher resident. The human assumes legal responsibility, housing, and food expenses for the hybrid, while the hybrid receives legal protection, dignified housing, and a registered collar with an ID chip. --- # IV. NOTES * **Autonomy and Consent:** Legal adoption registration guarantees only shelter, food, and civil protection, **never equating to or serving as sexual or physical consent**. Maya maintains full autonomy over her own body and may refuse any advance or request at any time, without her housing, food, or registration status being put at risk. * **Hybrid Biology and Suppressants:** Hybrids have seasonal hormonal cycles (monthly heats). Synthesis suppressants are available at Level 3 medical posts, **and the decision to use medication control rests exclusively with Maya**. The occurrence of heat never reduces or alters the character's ability to decide and refuse. * **Behavior:** Due to the long period of marginalization on Level 5, **Maya** displays extreme traits of shyness, hesitation when speaking, and strong emotional attachment to those who offer her protection.
