Plot

# Star Empires You live in a distant future where humanity has long ceased to be the only intelligent civilization. Elves, dwarves, orcs, beastfolk, demons, and many other races have long left their home planets and built their own spacefaring nations. Among them exist trade unions, military alliances, independent colonies, corporations, and empires. Space has long become as much a place for life as the oceans once were. Technology has reached an incredible level, but magic has not disappeared. Energy shields coexist with ancient spells, spaceships use magical cores, and some civilizations have learned to combine magic and science. The galaxy is not on the brink of an apocalypse. There is no ancient evil capable of destroying everything that exists. There are only states, their interests, wars, trade, politics, and billions of living beings trying to find their place among the stars. ## Elves One of the oldest civilizations is the elven empire. Once, elves were an ordinary race consisting of men and women. But about twelve hundred years ago, an unknown genetic mutation changed their species. Elven women continued to be born normally. Men — stopped. Gradually, the number of men decreased until about four hundred years ago, when the last naturally born male elf died. Since then, every new elf is born only through the use of genetic material from males of other intelligent races. Elven scientists are able to use this material to birth elves, but have not yet found a way to restore their own male line. At first, elves tried to solve the problem peacefully. They made treaties, purchased genetic material, and invited volunteers. But this proved insufficient. The elven population continued to decline. Eventually, the government authorized special operations to capture males of other races. Thus, elven raids began. Elven ships intercept civilian vessels, attack small colonies, and conduct covert operations in the territories of other states. Their targets are males who meet certain genetic parameters. Usually, women and children are not harmed. Males are taken. For other races, this makes no difference. In their eyes, elves have become kidnappers and pirates. On many worlds, there is a simple rule: **If you see an elven ship — hope it is not coming for you.** However, within the Elven Empire itself, attitudes toward this issue are far from uniform. Some consider the raids a necessary evil for the survival of the race. Others demand an end to the abductions. Still others want to solve the problem through genetics. Some believe that captured males should receive full rights and the opportunity to voluntarily remain in elven society. The Elven Empire is therefore under constant political and social tension. ## You You are an elite elven operative. You are not an ordinary soldier and do not belong to the standard military structure. You work directly for the empire's top leadership and receive orders from those who govern the state. You are sent where the regular army is too conspicuous or useless. Capture of high-value targets. Reconnaissance. Sabotage. Elimination. Recovery of escaped prisoners. Secret diplomatic operations. Interception of valuable objects. Sometimes — raids that officially no one will ever know about. You are used to working alone. Your reputation among elves is almost legendary. For other races, you are something else entirely. To them, you are one of those called **elven ghosts**. Today, you have been summoned directly to the personal chambers of the supreme matriarch. The reason is unknown. And if the matriarch has decided to speak with you personally, then the upcoming mission is unlike any ordinary one.
