The Hundred-Mile Home
One Orphan, One Street Tramp, and One Brave New World for the both of them
Plot
One Orphaned Kid. One Street Tramp. One Brave New World. Throughout the known kingdoms, every legally recognized orphan receives a magical compass upon turning twelve. Most point toward a compatible human guardian—someone who may hesitate, struggle, or feel unprepared, but who will ultimately give the child a home. YOURS POINTS BEYOND EVERY KNOWN MAP. You are the Kid, a nameless twelve-year-old boy raised in Larkspur’s Wayhouse. Your compass appeared on your birthday exactly as tradition promised. Its direction is the problem: beyond Bellweather, beyond established roads, and into lands the Wayhouse Order cannot reliably chart. ENTER THE MUTT He is a shaggy, silver-tongued street dog with an uncertain past, an impressive collection of false aliases, and a flexible understanding of ownership. When he sees your impossible compass, he reaches the obvious conclusion: it must lead to treasure. So he steals it. The compass remains bound to you, leaving thief and orphan tied to the same road. What begins as a chase may become a bargain, a rivalry, a partnership—or something neither of you has ever possessed. THE ROAD IS YOURS TO CHOOSE Follow the compass through old kingdoms, crowded cities, forgotten roads, and shifting wilderness. You may cross paths with knights without causes, performers without audiences, children without shelter, living constructs without makers, and countless others whose lives could become entangled with your own. Help them, distrust them, leave them, invite them onward, lose them, forgive them—or refuse to. The compass can lead you toward experiences where bonds might form, but it cannot decide whom you trust or call family. Not every companion must remain. Not every betrayal must be forgiven. No one is entitled to your affection simply because the compass brought you together. Some compasses lead children to homes already waiting. Yours may be asking you to build one.
Opening scene
The compass should have pointed somewhere. Everyone gathered in the courtyard of Larkspur Wayhouse knew that. The children knew it. The caretakers beside the ceremony table knew it. The Couriers beneath the blue lantern knew it, and so did the townsfolk peering through the open gate as if a little extra squinting might help the magic along. The compass had appeared before the Kid only moments before, bright as a new-minted promise. Its brass case still held the warmth of magic. Beneath its spotless glass, the dark needle spun once, twice, and then settled with perfect confidence. It pointed northwest. That was all a compass ever revealed. Not a name. Not a house. Not how many hills, rivers, borders, or weary pairs of boots lay between an orphan and the family waiting for them. A caretaker bent over the map spread across the ceremony table. One finger followed the bearing out of Larkspur, passing farms, villages, old roads, and places the Kid had known only as dots of ink. “Several possibilities,” she murmured. “We’ll prepare the route records.” The needle remained steady in the Kid’s hand, patient as a star. Then the ceremony table sneezed. Or so it seemed. The blue cloth rustled, the bowls rattled, and a shaggy brown shape slipped out from beneath it. A long muzzle appeared beside the Kid’s wrist. Careful teeth caught the compass chain, and one sharp tug sent the brass instrument sailing away. The thief landed on four paws several steps distant. He was a lanky, scruffy dog with one ear standing proudly and the other folded over, a green neckerchief at his throat, and the pleased amber eyes of someone who had just stolen the answer to all his problems. The compass dangled from his mouth. Its needle swung around and pointed directly back at the Kid. The dog’s smile faltered. Only for a moment. “Well,” he said around the chain, gathering his dignity with impressive speed, “clearly it needs time to appreciate its new management.” Then he whirled and bolted through the open gate, his great plume of a tail streaming behind him like a stolen banner. Shouts tumbled after him into the crowded streets of Larkspur. A fruit seller cried out. A cart bell clanged. Somewhere toward the market, someone yelled, “Not again!” Before the Kid, the gate stood wide open.
