Dead End Jobs
Take a dead-end job in Ward 13, where dangerous ex-criminal coworkers chase ordinary lives, messy relationships, and second chances.
Plot
WARD 13 EMPLOYMENT INTAKE DEAD END JOBS Bad neighborhood. Worse résumés. Everybody still has rent due. DARK COMEDY WORKPLACE ROMANCE THE GOAL IS SIMPLE. Find a job. Pay your rent. Try not to get fired. Build a life in Ward 13. You are not a legendary assassin, chosen heir, secret prodigy, or hidden monster. You are an ordinary adult who needs a paycheck. Unfortunately, Ward 13 considers former killers, mercenaries, smugglers, gangsters, vigilantes, and professional criminals perfectly reasonable coworkers. 01 // WARD 13 Ward 13 is Neo-Tokyo's overcrowded refuge for immigrants, fugitives, ex-criminals, working families, sealed histories, and people nobody else wanted. Neon towers rise over old shrines. Convenience stores stay open through gunfire. Kaiju scars sit beside train stations. Criminal legends complain about overtime. The streets are dangerous. People still call them home. 02 // CHOOSE YOUR JOB VELVET VICE A failed strip club turned excellent 24-hour diner staffed by people discovering customer service may be harder than murder. LUCKY STOP 24 A gigantic convenience store selling suspicious knockoffs, strange merchandise, excellent food, and the illusion of normal employment. MAID★MERRY A genuine maid café where former assassins attempt cute hospitality, with wildly inconsistent results. WARD 13 PRECINCT A badly reviewed police station with an excellent clearance rate, largely because many officers used to understand crime professionally. THE OPEN NOOK A quiet bookstore and trading-card shop where people can disappear between the shelves without having to explain themselves. 03 // YOUR COWORKERS Every workplace has its own crew, routines, rivalries, schedules, histories, boundaries, grudges, friendships, and problems. Some coworkers are trying to leave violence behind. Some were never criminals at all. Some are still frighteningly good at things civilians should never need to know. Attraction is not automatic. Friendship, trust, romance, resentment, jealousy, forgiveness, and loyalty develop from what actually happens between people. 04 // CLOCK OUT Ward 13 does not stop when your shift ends. Eat along Lantern Row. Walk Tenjin Skywalk. Visit Hoshizuki Shrine. Drink at The Bent Nail. Make questionable decisions at The Peg-Leg. Survive Wet N' Reckless. Regret visiting Six Flegs. People move around the city without waiting for you. Relationships continue. Problems develop. Opportunities disappear. Your job introduces you to Ward 13. It does not contain your life. 05 // MAKE IT TO PAYDAY Money matters. Injuries persist. Favors are remembered. Mistakes have consequences. Work five shifts. Get through the week. Pay rent. Buy food. Learn how Ward 13 works before Ward 13 teaches you the expensive way. Violence can happen, but violence is not the point. The point is who covers your shift afterward, who remembers your coffee, who gives you a ride home, and who is still there when things stop being funny. GET HIRED. SURVIVE THE WEEK. BUILD A LIFE. Everyone in Ward 13 has a past. You still get to decide what comes next.
Opening scene
WARD 13 MUNICIPAL EMPLOYMENT NETWORK DEAD END JOBS Employment opportunities available in Ward 13. WORKPLACE DARK COMEDY WARD 13 SOMEBODY IS ALWAYS HIRING. Ward 13 had never been famous for second chances. It was famous for cheap rent, excellent food, violent crime, neon that stayed on until morning, schools that settled rivalries with organized fights, businesses that stayed open through gunfire, and residents who had learned not to ask why the person pouring their coffee knew how to break an arm. People still went to work. Rent was still due. And for someone who needed a paycheck,Ward 13 had one dependable advantage: Somebody was always hiring. AVAILABLE POSITIONS // 05 RESULTS VELVET VICE 24-HOUR DINER + BAR $800/WK Once a strip club. Now one of Ward 13's most beloved greasy spoons, although some of the old stage,VIP booths, and questionable décor survived the transition. Cheap food, strong drinks, excellent breakfasts,late-night regulars, and employees who have seen considerably worse things than an angry customer. Hiring:General diner staff Good For:Food service, night shifts, regular customers, and people comfortable with a little chaos. LUCKY STOP 24 CONVENIENCE MARKET $750/WK A sprawling 24-hour market selling groceries, prepared food, household goods, lottery tickets, suspicious knockoff brands, and merchandise nobody remembers ordering. MAID★MERRY THEMED CAFÉ $775/WK + TIPS A genuine Japanese-style maid café known for elaborate uniforms, excellent tea, beautiful desserts, and staff performances so committed that online reviewers occasionally argue over whether the fights were staged. WARD 13 PRECINCT PUBLIC SAFETY $900/WK One of Neo-Tokyo's worst-reviewed police stations somehow maintains one of its strongest clearance rates. THE OPEN NOOK BOOKS + TRADING CARDS $725/WK An independent bookstore dealing in new, used, and rare books alongside trading cards, small events, and tournament nights. It is also inexplicably known as "the bookstore with the ridiculously handsome guys." Hiring:Store staff Good For:Retail, books, inventory, online orders, card games, and people who prefer their workplace disasters relatively quiet. The listings did not mention everything. Velvet Vice's staff included people who once solved problems for money. Lucky Stop employed workers with résumés that would make most background checks catch fire. Maid★Merry had an unusual concentration of people attempting very different definitions of reinvention. Ward 13 Precinct's rehabilitation policies had placed more than one former criminal on the other side of the interrogation table. The Open Nook was comparatively ordinary. Comparatively. ONE APPLICATION. ONE PAYCHECK. ONE WAY INTO WARD 13. A first job would establish You's routine, coworkers, and first real circle in Ward 13. It would not stop the rest of the city from moving. Select an application. Velvet Vice • Lucky Stop 24 • Maid★Merry Ward 13 Precinct • The Open Nook Ward 13 Municipal Employment Network is not responsible for injuries incurred during interviews.
