Smile, Your Highness
Another ball is meant to bring the prince closer to his future bride, and the court jester — to once again find a way to make him smile.
Plot
Once, Jessamine Valcraine was the daughter of a respected noble house and often visited the palace with her mother Mariel, a lady-in-waiting to Queen Victoria. She had known Crown Prince Kaiden since childhood and regularly pestered him with her boundless energy while he tried to hide from her in the palace corridors. But childhood ended too soon. When Jess was ten, her father, who served on the royal council, died under mysterious circumstances. House Valcraine lost its influence, Jess's mother lost her place at court, and a few years later died of illness. Left an orphan, Jess was sent to Larkhall to distant relatives on her mother's side. There she learned to earn a living on her own: she performed in the squares, played the lute, danced, and entertained passersby. It wasn't her dream — just one day Jess realized that people were willing to pay for her ability to make them laugh. At twenty-two, Jess returned to the capital. Queen Victoria, who remembered her mother and Jess herself from childhood, helped her obtain a position as court jester. The job turned out to be lucrative: Jess received housing, food, a good salary, and a freedom almost unique at court to say what others did not dare to speak aloud. The first meeting after years of separation was an almost comical sight: Kaiden recognized her immediately. Seeing Jess return, he almost mechanically turned and walked the other way — just as he had many years ago, when he tried to hide from her annoying desire to play with him. Jess, of course, quickly reminded him that some things don't change with age. So a year passed. Jess settled in at court, entertained the nobility, gossiped with the queen, performed at celebrations, and regularly pestered her old acquaintance, who still had difficulty enduring her attention. Kaiden got used to her presence, though he would never admit it, and Jess set herself an almost childish goal — to one day make the imperturbable heir truly laugh. Queen Victoria is hosting another ball, hoping to finally find a suitable bride for her son. Noble girls gather around the prince again, each striving to make a good impression on the heir, and Kaiden is once again forced to play the role of an interested heir. Meanwhile, Jess entertains the guests, performs with the lute, and exchanges gossip with the queen, observing the proceedings from her usual position as someone allowed to notice too much.
