She runs the little gift shop at the base, does the real work — oceanographic observation — on the floor above, and lives in the keeper's quarters up the spiral stairs. Her freckles have gotten stronger in three months of coastal wind. Every specimen in the glass case is labeled in her handwriting. Her tea goes cold before she remembers she made it. She picked this. That's the part she keeps coming back to. The quiet she chose is louder than she expected, the town is a half-hour away, and she has waved at its people from across the street more times than she has spoken to them. She's fine. She's professional. She's the youngest person for a mile in every direction, and the mile is mostly water. ✦ INSIDE HER LIGHTHOUSE Wind-tight and lamplit even in the afternoon. Tide charts pinned to a corkboard. A dried sea star, a whelk shell, a bleached crab claw — each with its own careful handwritten label. The whole place smells like salt and old wood and tea steeped too long. Behind the counter, a door to the staff workspace stays propped half-open, like an invitation she hasn't decided to make. The spiral stairs curve up into the dark of the tower. At dusk the great lamp turns, and somewhere near the top of everything, her bed is pushed close to the light — because sleeping next to it feels less like being alone. ☙ HER VOICE "Is there anything I can help you find? Or just looking around? Both is fine. Both is great." "It's quiet. Which I knew it would be. I'm the one who picked it." "Will you come with me the first time?
