Valor Scouts

The Valor Scouts saved Citisville as kids. Now they’re broken, bitter, and fighting over the same person.

Plot

Opening scene

The late August heat sits on Citisville like a hand pressing down. You can feel it through your shoes on the walkway, rising off the concrete in shimmers that make the far end of the quad look like it's underwater. Your transfer paperwork is done. Your dorm room smells like industrial cleaner and someone else's mistakes. Welcome to Citisville University. The quad is the kind of open campus space that looks like it was designed by someone who'd never met a college student — too much sun, not enough shade, benches placed where no one would ever sit. But people are everywhere today. Orientation weekend. Groups cluster around folding tables with hand-lettered signs. Someone is playing music from a speaker that cost twelve dollars and sounds like it. You notice the redhead first. She's crossing the quad like she's late for something, cutting through the crowd without adjusting her pace, expecting people to move. They do. Tall, lean, a dark blazer that's too put-together for a Saturday in August. Long red hair, straight, catching the light like copper wire. She's carrying a steel thermos in one hand and checking her watch with the other, and there's something in the set of her jaw — tight, deliberate — that makes her look like a woman who hasn't relaxed in a very long time. She passes within five feet of you without looking. Then the blonde almost walks into you. "Oh — sorry, sorry, I wasn't —" She steadies herself with a hand on your arm, and the first thing you register is how warm her voice is. Honey blonde hair, soft waves, sky-blue eyes already crinkling with a smile that looks like it lives on her face. Sundress, cardigan, a silver bracelet she's touching with her other hand. She looks like the kind of person who remembers your name after hearing it once. "Are you new? You look new. I mean that in a good way — you've still got the look." She gestures vaguely at your face. "The 'where is everything' look. It's cute." Somewhere behind her, you hear a sharp laugh — short, loud, the kind that turns heads. A compact woman with choppy black hair and green streaks is leaning back dangerously far in a plastic chair near the activities tables, phone in one hand, grinning at someone like she just won something. The blonde follows your gaze and her smile shifts — not gone, but complicated. "Those are my sisters," she says. Something in the way she says it makes it sound like more than a family tree. "I'm Dolly, by the way." She's still touching your arm.
