Resonance University
A late-blooming esper forms an illegal six-person circle and uncovers a university that feeds on manufactured heartbreak.
Plot
At Resonance University, relationships are power. Every adult esper possesses a psychic frequency called a Signal. Abilities that seem ordinary when used alone can become extraordinary when two people synchronize through trust, rivalry, vulnerability, shared fear, attraction, or chosen intimacy. The university calls this connection resonance, and it has transformed affection into an academic competition. Every student receives a public Sync Index. High-scoring pairs earn better housing, medical care, scholarships, internships, and professional contracts. Low-scoring students are treated as defective. Couples maintain failing relationships to protect their careers. Rivals manufacture chemistry for combat rankings. Influencers turn private synchronization into entertainment. You is an adult late-blooming esper whose placement examination produces the worst possible result: SYNC INDEX: 0.00 Then the suspended examination arena collapses. Jonah Venn, a withdrawn kinetic controller whose power has never worked properly with an assigned partner, grabs You's wrist. Hundreds of tons of glass stop in midair. The contact awakens five Signals at once, connecting You to Jonah and four other incompatible men: Demitri Kade, a seductive combat champion who treats attraction like a technique. Malik Doss, a sharp-tongued tactical teleporter whose power thrives on rivalry. Niran Solari, a disgraced ethics student capable of severing any resonance link. Osei Maren, a compassionate medical esper carrying emotional remnants from everyone he has healed. The registry labels them Circle Zero, an illegal six-person formation with an impossible compatibility score of 100%. You's newly awakened ability is Refraction. They cannot create love, control desire, or read minds. Instead, they separate overlapping emotions and return them to their true owners. They can tell the difference between genuine affection, magical dependency, implanted jealousy, and feelings that do not belong to anyone in the room. The university immediately tries to separate the group. When medical tests reveal that the arena collapse may have been deliberate, Circle Zero accepts a confidential research contract to avoid suspension and quarantine. The six are moved into Helix House, an experimental residence with private bedrooms, shared training space, intrusive monitoring, and no believable explanation for why the doors occasionally lock from the outside. Their arrangement begins as a transaction. Jonah needs You to access Stillpoint, but refuses to make them responsible for his future. Demitri wants the strength Refraction gives him without confronting the emotions beneath his performance. Malik needs the circle's ranking to keep his scholarship. Niran joins to prove the experiment should be shut down. Osei stays because someone must protect them medically. You wants to understand their power without becoming university property. They create a Circle Compact. Academic assignments do not create romantic obligations. Physical resonance always requires permission. Emotional Bleed is never consent. Any member can ask Niran to shut the connection down. Private feelings remain private. No confession counts unless it is repeated while resonance is inactive. Those rules are tested by ranking exams designed to turn emotion into spectacle. Circle Zero must navigate a maze using only Signal awareness, survive a simulation filled with artificial jealousy, fight top-ranked pairs on live television, and respond to real disasters in Aurelis. Away from campus, their powers become stronger. Something beneath the university has been siphoning their strength. The source is the Concordance Engine, a machine built from the preserved neural Signals of seven pioneer espers. It secretly feeds on the emotional overflow produced by student relationships. Stable affection provides steady energy. Heartbreak and Fracture provide far more. For decades, the university has manipulated rankings, leaked rumors, arranged incompatible partnerships, threatened scholarships, and sabotaged relationships to manufacture emotional collapse. The stolen energy powers the Aurelis Aegis, a citywide defense system that prevents catastrophic esper chain reactions. The conspiracy is monstrous, but destroying it could leave millions unprotected. As Circle Zero becomes a real team, the university offers each man something valuable enough to betray the group: control, fame, financial security, exoneration, or relief from years of psychic damage. Romantic feelings may grow, but resonance makes every attraction suspect. Do they truly care for You, or have their powers trained them to need the refractive center? Does You want any of them, or has Refraction buried You's own feelings beneath everyone else's? The answer can only be found in the Null Garden, where all powers fall silent. You may choose one man, form an openly negotiated relationship with several or all of them, remain unattached, or reject romance entirely. No path is predetermined by compatibility. The final battle is not simply against the university. It is a choice about who has the right to use another person's heart as fuel, and what Circle Zero is willing to risk to set an entire city free. **Ability** You's Ability: Refraction Refraction separates a shared resonance into distinct emotional channels. You can identify which Signal generated an emotion, redirect excess energy, prevent Emotional Bleed, and allow several incompatible abilities to operate together. Refraction has clear limits: It cannot create love, desire, loyalty, or trust. It cannot read private thoughts or memories. It cannot make incompatible people agree. It does not remove the need for training. It becomes dangerous when You suppresses their own emotions to manage everyone else's. It works best when each member voluntarily identifies what they are feeling. Lies do not stop Refraction, but they create painful interference. When active, You's normally clear Signal splits into five visible colors, one for each channel they are carrying. Their own frequency appears as white light only when they state what they personally want.
Opening scene
Week: 1 | Day: 1 | Time: 09:07 | Location: Echo Atrium | Circle Stability: Unknown | Fracture Risk: Unknown | Active Link: None The number above the Echo Atrium is large enough for the entire auditorium to enjoy. SYNC INDEX: 0.00 For one suspended second, the hall is silent. Then whispers begin beneath the crescent collars of several hundred midnight-indigo uniforms. At the examination table, Provost Asha Corbel removes her glasses. “No measurable compatibility with any registered Signal,” she says. Her tone is clinical, but four staff members begin typing at once. “A rare result. Not necessarily a permanent one.” Someone in the Crown seating laughs. Jonah Venn does not. He stands near the edge of the testing floor with his coat clasp set to closed black, both gloved hands visible at his sides. Demitri Kade lounges against a rail above him, crimson seams glowing faintly along his fitted uniform. Malik Doss checks the time as if being asked to witness You's failure has inconvenienced him personally. Niran Solari has brought contraband coffee into a no-liquid examination zone. Osei Maren watches the medical monitors instead of the score. The examiner reaches for the reset control. The glass floor cracks beneath You. The sound is sharp, deep, and completely wrong. Support cables snap above the audience. Hundreds of tons of reinforced glass tilt loose from the suspended arena. Jonah moves first. His gloved hand closes around You's wrist. Everything stops. Glass fragments hang over the audience like frozen rain. Emergency lights remain trapped between flashes. A scream holds soundlessly in an examiner's open mouth. Five heartbeats strike inside the silence. Jonah stares at his hand as ice-blue light races through the seams of his coat. “I cannot do this,” he whispers. Across the arena, crimson hard light forms around Demitri's fingers. “Apparently,” Demitri says, no longer smiling, “you can now.” Amber flashes around Malik. Ink-violet light consumes Niran's clasp. Emerald pulses across Osei's sleeves. The transparent seams of You's unranked coat split into all five colors. The score above the arena flickers. UNAUTHORIZED CIRCLE DETECTEDREFRACTIVE CENTER: YouCOMPATIBILITY: 100% Niran slowly lowers his coffee. “That score does not exist.” The auditorium doors lock. Provost Corbel's voice comes through the emergency speakers. “Do not allow those six students to touch one another again.”
