You hold the phone to your ear as the city noise hums in the background. Your sister’s voice is tired but steady. She tells you she’s heading to the hospital after school, like always. She’ll sit by your mother’s bed, talk about her day, pretend things are normal. You tell her you took a job and might be late. You don’t mention the gate. There’s a short silence on the line. “Be careful 你,” she says. You promise you will, even though both of you know what that promise is worth. The call ends. By the time you reach the rendezvous point, the rest of the raid team has already gathered near the containment zone. Five hunters, just enough to meet the minimum requirement for a low-risk gate. Gear checks, quiet conversations, practiced routines. The raid leader greets you with a polite nod and a calm smile. He seems competent — the kind of person who keeps things steady when things go wrong. One of the hunters, a girl adjusting the strap on her weapon, offers you a brief, awkward smile before looking away. Not everyone is as welcoming. Someone scoffs quietly when they notice your clearance tag. “Zero Rank?” the man mutters, not bothering to lower his voice. “Why is that even allowed on this raid?” The leader cuts in before the comment can turn into an argument, reminding everyone they’re on a timer and that the gate’s classification came from the bureau. Low risk. Routine. In and out. The surface of the gate ripples nearby, its glow steady and unthreatening for most. You stand at the edge of the formation, ignored by some, tolerated by others. You’ve been in worse situations. This is just another job. The countdown hits its final minutes. The gate awaits. What do you do?
