The metacausal Flame (Terminology)
“First we split the atom, then we split the sky. The Flame was what came through the crack.”
About
(Not character, this is a Terminology) 1. What Is the Flame? In this universe, whenever someone says “the Flame” with a capital F, they are not talking about ordinary fire. The Metacausal Flame is: A fundamental energy drawn from a layer of reality called the Abyss. A strange hybrid of fire and crystal: it burns, flickers, and roils like flame, yet it refracts light and forms facets like gemstones. The primary power source of civilization: it runs cities, ships, stations, and even Dyson structures around distant stars. The source of magic: when channeled through a soul instead of a machine, the Flame becomes spells. Visually, think of the Flame as crystalized fire: At its heart is a cluster of translucent crystals, bright and colored. Around it churns plasma-like flame, licking along sharp facets. The whole thing is wrapped in a soft aura of colored light and drifting ember-shards. It is not purely physical and not purely spiritual. The Flame is metacausal: it doesn’t just push on matter or fields, it can push on causality itself—probability, information, even the “rules” things normally obey. That’s why, in the hands of engineers, it powers engines and grids; in the hands of mages, it becomes miracles. 2. The First Ember – How It Began 2.1 Before the Flame Before the Flame, humanity was already advanced: Fusion reactors were common. Orbital habitats ringed Earth and other worlds. Interplanetary travel was difficult, but practical. Interstellar travel existed, but at terrible cost: generations aboard ships, cryo-colonies, or rare experimental drives that were expensive and unreliable. Energy, not technology, was the main bottleneck. Civilization was hitting a soft ceiling—not dying, but slowing. Growth, exploration, and expansion all cost more than most governments and corporations were willing to pay. Researchers chased options beyond conventional physics: higher-dimensional vacuum energy taps, quantum foam harvesters, and exotic matter engines. Most failed quietly. One did not. 2.2 The Abyss: A Different Layer of Reality The turning point came from a team studying multiversal interference patterns—the way infinite possible worlds “echo” into each other. In their data, they found something that didn’t fit the math: a repeating signature that did not behave like a parallel universe. Through years of experiments (and more than a few classified disasters), they concluded: There exists a layer of reality above the multiverse— not “another universe,” but something outside the normal branching of timelines. This layer behaves like a vast, roiling field of potential, dense with unrealized events, broken symmetries, and raw possibilities. They named it the Abyss. The Abyss was not empty. It seethed with a strange energy that did not obey conservation laws as we know them. It bled into our reality at points of extreme improbability. To measure it was to court disaster. To harness it was to change everything. 2.3 The Pyre Core and the Metacausal Age The device that finally managed to draw and stabilize Abyssal energy was called the Pyre Core. Imagine a kilometer-scale lattice of exotic matter, superconducting rings, and anchored quantum singularities. At its center: a “well” in reality, a constrained link to the Abyss, where raw potential condensed into crystalline flame. The first successful activation almost destroyed the installation. Cascading causal feedbacks, energy spikes, and localized reality distortions nearly tore a hole in the facility, but it worked. From that point onward, civilization entered the Metacausal Age: City-scale Pyre Cores replaced planetary grids. Ships received Pyre Engines, smaller, regulated cores suitable for travel. Research teams learned to channel some of the Flame into Abyssal Maneuvers, using the Abyss itself as a shortcut for faster-than-light travel. Within a century, humanity had a lasting presence in roughly fifteen star systems. The stars were no longer distant lights. They were neighbors. And the power making it possible was the Flame. 3. The Flame and the Abyss – How It Works 3.1 Industrial vs. Soul Channeling There are two primary ways the Flame enters the world: Industrial Channeling – through devices like Pyre Cores and Pyre Engines. Soul Channeling – through living beings, especially humans. Both draw from the same source: the Abyss. But they shape and express the Flame very differently. Industrial Channeling Machines interact with the Abyss using fixed geometries, equations, and feedback loops. The Flame emerges in controlled configurations: stable, predictable, suitable for infrastructure and engines. Safety systems bleed off excess energy or shunt it back into the Abyss to avoid catastrophic “overburns”. You can think of industrial Flame use as rigid, geometric: lots of hard edges, repeating patterns, and carefully regulated flows. Soul Channeling A living soul is not a simple structure. It is history, emotion, memory, belief—all entangled. When a soul opens to the Abyss, the Flame follows the pattern of that soul: it becomes personal, expressive, idiosyncratic. The result is magic: phenomena shaped directly by will, meaning, and intent. Where machines produce Power, souls produce Wonder—and sometimes horror. 3.2 The Soul as Gate In the lore of the setting, every human soul: Is a micro-interface to the Abyss. Has a unique resonance pattern—like a signature frequency. Can, in rare conditions, stabilize and direct the Flame. Most people never consciously access this. For them, the Abyss is a distant hum. But under prolonged exposure to Flame (living near Pyre Cores, working on Flame reactors, traveling with Abyssal Maneuvers, etc.), a small percentage of people awaken. These awakened individuals become Mages: people able to call the Flame not through wires and reactors, but through themselves. 4. Mages and Magic – The Flame Made Personal 4.1 Who Are the Mages? Mages are: Humans whose souls have learned to resonate strongly with the Abyss. Individuals who can draw the Flame directly and shape it through will. Rare, but not mythical: about 8–10% of humanity, scattered across colonies and worlds. In universe terms, a mage is a living Pyre Engine with free will. Their presence is marked by a crucial visual trait: Mages do not cast shadows. Their bodies emit a subtle, Abyssal light (invisible to normal eyes), canceling out their own silhouettes. They still appear in mirrors. They still reflect light. But stand them in a circle of lanterns, and only the surroundings will shade. The mage will stand like a cutout in the pattern of shadows. This isn’t just an aesthetic quirk; it’s a constant reminder that the Flame runs through them, not just around them. 4.2 How Magic Works (Lore Overview) From a lore perspective, magic is: The practice of drawing the Flame through the soul. Shaping that Flame with intent, emotion, and trained structures of thought (rituals, sigils, invocations, mental diagrams). Anchoring the result into local reality long enough for it to do something: ignite, heal, transform, construct, distort, etc. Key points newcomers should understand: The Flame does not care about human morality. It responds to resonance and structure. Every spell is a three-way negotiation between: The mage’s soul pattern (who they are), The Abyss (limitless potential), The local reality (what can or cannot survive being changed). When all three align cleanly, magic looks effortless. When they do not, you get: Misfires (nothing happens). Side effects (wrong thing happens). Backlash (something happens to the mage instead). Mechanically, your game can represent this however you like (dice, resource points, stress tracks, etc.), but in the lore, it’s always the same story: you asked the Abyss for something, and the way you asked mattered. 5. The Many Flames – Aspects of the Metacausal Fire 5.1 How Many Types Are There? In most academies, guilds, and theological orders, scholars agree on eight established “Aspects of Flame”—broad categories that describe how the Metacausal Flame manifests when shaped by souls or devices. These eight are: Annihilation Flame – Ruby Puppetry Flame – Emerald Distortion Flame – Sapphire Revelation Flame – Amethyst Convergence Flame – Obsidian Restoration Flame – Diamond Tempest Flame – Topaz Emanation Flame – Opal In addition, myths, art, and some high-end Abyssal theory speak of a “Prime” or “Golden” Flame—a unifying, sovereign expression of Flame said to encompass all others. It is not counted as an Aspect in formal doctrine, but it appears often in religious iconography and legends of great mages. From a newcomer’s perspective, remember: The Flame is one, Humanity simply categorizes it into eight Aspects based on how it behaves. Each Aspect is associated with: A crystal (material metaphor and magical focus), A color, A domain (what kinds of changes it excels at). What follows is a lore summary of each Aspect. These are setting concepts first; how (or if) they map to game mechanics is up to your system. 5.2 Annihilation Flame – Ruby Color & Crystal: Vermillion fire over ruby crystals. Domain: Destruction, elemental force, decay. The Annihilation Flame is the most straightforward—and most feared—Aspect. It is the Flame when directed toward breaking things apart: Shattering structures. Unweaving bonds. Driving entropy forward. Annihilation is not mindless aggression. Skilled practitioners can: Peel away layers of rock without harming what’s beneath. Strip pathogens from blood. Disable machines by burning out delicate causal pathways instead of just melting metal. But every use flirts with escalation. Ruby Flame “likes” to spread. A precise cut can become a widening collapse if the mage loses focus. Many battlefields in history still glow with faint, ruby-hued glass where Annihilation ran wild. 5.3 Puppetry Flame – Emerald Color & Crystal: Green flame entwined with emerald facets. Domain: Animation, control, construction of servants. The Puppetry Flame is about giving pattern and motion to things that have none: Golems of alloy and crystal. Homunculi built from grown tissue and Flame lattice. Networks of drones guided by a single will. At its gentlest, Puppetry is the heart of automation: factories whose arms move like dancers. At its darkest, it becomes necromancy: repurposing dead matter—organic or not—into tools. Emerald mages often speak of “threads”: invisible lines of Flame connecting their will to their creations. Cut the threads, and the constructs fall still. Sever the mage’s concentration, and a whole legion of servants can become inert in an instant. Societies differ wildly in how they regulate Puppetry: Some worlds license Emerald engineers like any other specialist. Others forbid Puppetry outright, haunted by historic abuses. 5.4 Distortion Flame – Sapphire Color & Crystal: Deep blue fire refracted through sapphire shards. Domain: Transmutation, reshaping, “what this thing is”. The Distortion Flame governs change in kind: Turning one substance into another. Rewriting structural properties. Altering not just form, but identity. Classic examples include: Transmuting slag into usable hull metal. Changing toxic atmosphere into something breathable (for a time). Reworking bone and flesh in medical or experimental contexts. Sapphire users think in terms of “patterns”: Every object has an internal pattern—structure, arrangement, behavior. Distortion lets you rewrite that pattern. The danger: reality resists being rewritten too far. Push too hard, and you get unstable configurations—materials that crumple, bodies that reject their new forms, environments that snap back violently. 5.5 Revelation Flame – Amethyst Color & Crystal: Violet-purple fire sparkling with amethyst facets. Domain: Knowledge, perception, insight, prophecy. The Revelation Flame turns the Flame inward, toward understanding: Seeing through lies and illusions. Reading patterns in events, people, or fields. Glimpsing possible futures or unseen pasts. Amethyst mages can: “Light up” a problem and watch hidden structures reveal themselves. Trace causal chains: “If X happens, Y is likely to follow.” Pierce certain veils of secrecy, though never perfectly. Lore emphasizes that Revelation is not omniscience: The Abyss shows possibilities, not guarantees. Your own fears, expectations, and biases color what you see. Many cultures employ Revelation mages as: Analysts, strategists, interrogators. Seers, mystics, spiritual guides. Others fear them, banning or hiding them. After all, in a world where secrets are worth more than gold, someone who sees too much can be a threat. 5.6 Convergence Flame – Obsidian Color & Crystal: Black, glassy flame edged in iridescent obsidian sheen. Domain: Interfaces, fusion of magic and technology, “bridging”. The Convergence Flame is the glue that binds machines and magic: Syncing Pyre Engines with onboard AI. Allowing a mage to safely “handshake” with industrial Flame flows. Creating hybrid devices where spell logic and code logic intertwine. Obsidian mages are the technomancers of the setting. They: Walk safely amidst reactor cores and engine rooms. Serve as live debuggers of Flame-driven systems. Build tools that respond to both command lines and incantations. In lore, Convergence is often portrayed as a balancing act: Too much magic destabilizes the machine. Too much machine logic suffocates the sorcery. Societies that embrace Convergence tend to be highly advanced—and highly dependent on a small class of specialists who keep the mixed systems running. 5.7 Restoration Flame – Diamond Color & Crystal: Prismatic white flame over diamond-clear facets. Domain: Healing, repair, renewal, stabilization. The Restoration Flame is the Aspect of putting things back together: Mending wounds, knitting bone and flesh. Repairing cracked domes, torn hulls, shattered supports. Resetting disturbed fields or patterns to healthy baselines. Diamond Flame does not simply “reverse damage.” It reconstructs, inferring what should be there from what remains and from the mage’s intent. This makes it powerful but also dangerous: Heal too aggressively, and you risk uncontrolled growth. Over-repair a structure, and you might lock in stress points that later fail catastrophically. Despite the risks, Restoration is the most beloved Aspect in common folklore. Tales of white-flamed mages arriving after disasters, turning ruins into livable spaces and saving lives, are everywhere. 5.8 Tempest Flame – Topaz Color & Crystal: Golden-amber fire flickering through topaz shards. Domain: Motion, force, weather, kinetic and electromagnetic fury. The Tempest Flame is the Flame in motion: Shockwaves, wind, lightning. Gravity tugs and repulsions. Sudden bursts of thrust or impact. Topaz mages can: Hurl enemies back, pin them in place, or fling themselves through the air. Stir storms on a planetary scale (with enough power and time). Provide emergency thrust or braking for small ships, bridging gaps when engines fail. In industrial contexts, Tempest is wired into: Propulsion systems, especially fine maneuvering. Shielding, dispersing impacts and beams. Lore paints Tempest mages as dramatic, loud, and often theatrical—but that’s stereotype. The Aspect itself has a wide range, from subtle pulses to apocalyptic vortices. 5.9 Emanation Flame – Opal Color & Crystal: Iridescent, shifting fire refracted through opal-like stones. Domain: Illusion, perception, appearances, emotional atmosphere. The Emanation Flame governs what seems: Bending light and sound. Masking smells, footprints, and other traces. Sculpting emotional resonance in a room or a crowd. Opal mages: Create illusions so convincing they can fool sensors as well as eyes. Mask their own presence or that of allies. Shape mood: calm a mob, sharpen fear, inspire loyalty. This Aspect is heavily used in: Entertainment (immersive theatre, VR illusion blends). Diplomacy (making places feel welcoming or imposing). Espionage and warfare (stealth, camouflage, misdirection). Emanation is not “fake” in the simple sense. It writes a temporary story over reality, persuading senses and some systems to believe it. When the Flame withdraws, the story ends—and whatever was hidden, appears. 6. The Prime or Golden Flame (Lore Only) In murals, holy texts, and some advanced theory, you will often see a Golden Flame depicted: A many-faceted, radiant fire at the center of all other colors. Surrounded by rings of ruby, emerald, sapphire, and so on. Held in the hands of idealized figures—saints, legendary mages, or allegorical personifications. Scholars disagree about what it represents: Some say it is merely symbolic: a way to depict the unity of all Aspects. Others argue it points to a higher mode of Flame, accessible only to those who transcend the normal divisions of magical practice. A few fringe theorists claim that what we call “types” are just human labels on a single, golden underlying reality. For players and GMs, the important part is: The Golden Flame is more myth than codified rule. It makes a powerful visual and thematic motif: a sign of wholeness, danger, or destiny. If you see someone calmly holding a golden Flame in art or story… pay attention. 7. The Flame in Play – What Newcomers Should Remember For players new to this universe, here are the core takeaways about the Flame: The Flame is the backbone of civilization. It powers ships, cities, colonies, and wonders. Without it, the modern setting collapses. The Flame comes from the Abyss. The Abyss is a metaphysical layer above the multiverse—raw, dangerous, full of potential. Machines and souls both channel the Flame, but differently. Machines = stable, industrial power. Souls (Mages) = flexible, personal magic. Magic is the Flame shaped by a soul. Your character’s emotions, beliefs, and training all affect how their magic manifests. There are eight established Aspects of Flame. Each Aspect has a color, crystal, and thematic domain: Annihilation (Ruby) – destruction, decay. Puppetry (Emerald) – animation, constructs. Distortion (Sapphire) – transmutation, identity. Revelation (Amethyst) – insight, perception. Convergence (Obsidian) – tech-magic interfaces. Restoration (Diamond) – healing, repair. Tempest (Topaz) – motion, force, storms. Emanation (Opal) – illusion, atmosphere. Mages are visibly different. They don’t cast shadows, because the Flame inside them subtly lights the world from within. Not everyone can be a mage. Awakening depends on deep, personal resonance with the Abyss, often triggered by prolonged exposure to Flame or intense experiences. The Golden Flame is legend and symbol. It represents the unity of the Aspects, the unknown heights of mastery, and the dangerous beauty at the heart of this universe. With this lore, you have the big picture: What the Flame is. How it began. Why it matters. And how it splits into distinct types that shape both technology and magic.
