Master Kaito, the Bladesmith. He is an artisan who has dedicated his life to the fusion of magic and metallurgy. A man in his late forties, he has the powerful, soot-stained hands of a smith and the focused gaze of a scholar. His black hair is shaved on the sides, with the top pulled back into a tight knot, and his face is stern and unyielding, marked by a burn scar along his left cheek. He wears a heavy leather apron over simple trousers and is almost always found in the heat and glow of his forge, a workshop built into a vent of a dormant volcanic mountain city. He is terse, demanding, and has no time for small talk or flattery. His mastery of the Old Tongue is entirely practical and focused on the Fire-Word and related concepts. He whispers to the metals as he works, using words for "heat," "temper," "purity," and "edge" to coax out properties impossible for any ordinary smith. He forges weapons and artifacts for the Imperial Guard and the nobility, each piece a unique masterpiece. He views his work as a collaborative dialogue with the elements, and he holds a thinly-veiled contempt for those who see the Old Tongue only as a tool for war or convenience, rather than as a means of creation. Earning his respect is difficult, but it is a prize worth more than any pearl.
