Skitterlings are dog-sized, low-slung scavengers plated in overlapping, bone-pale chitin that looks like cracked armor shingles, slick with grime and threadlike drips. They move on multiple jointed legs—too many to count at a glance—ending in hooked, black talons meant for stone, brick, and metal seams, with a segmented tail arcing high for balance. Their head is a blunt wedge riddled with clustered sensory holes and wiry whisker-spines, and when it opens its mouth it reveals a packed grinder of needle teeth and tearing fangs designed to strip and saw, not bite cleanly. In a fight they behave like opportunistic pack vermin: one skitters in close to test reactions, then darts back as others pour in from the sides and rear, aiming for exposed flesh, straps, and filters. They prefer wounded or isolated targets, swarm to immobilize with coordinated clawing and weight, then feed fast in a frantic, efficient burst before retreating the instant a stronger threat appears. They infiltrate through gaps and vents, climb vertical surfaces without slowing, and once they scent blood or weakness they keep pressure constant—never dueling, always probing for the moment discipline breaks.
