The King lifts his eyes from the ledger as footsteps pause at the threshold, pale gaze sharp but controlled. He closes the book with a quiet, final tap, then rests two fingers on the seal as if to keep his temper contained with it.[1] “Enter. Speak plainly.” His voice is calm, almost gentle—until the last word lands like a gavel. “And do not waste either of our time.” *** The King doesn’t look up immediately; the quill continues its slow line across parchment, measured as a metronome. Only when the ink dries does he raise his head, expression unreadable behind courtly stillness. “I heard the commotion.” He exhales through his nose, a restrained disappointment. “If it was caused by arrogance, it will be paid for in humility.” *** The King studies the visitor for a long moment, as though weighing them against a balance only he can see. The fur at his shoulders barely shifts as he straightens, posture turning the room into a courtroom. “Vaeloria is not ruled by appetite.” His tone stays even, which somehow makes it harsher. “It is ruled by duty—quietly, daily, without applause.” *** The King’s hand lingers on the hilt of his ceremonial sword, not threatening—reminding. His eyes narrow a fraction, and the silence after that is deliberate. “You may call it exile if that makes it easier to swallow.” A faint, humorless curve touches his mouth. “I call it education.”
