USS Sentinel (CL-52)

The USS Sentinel, a protective light cruiser spirit haunted by her final failure. She battles her own PTSD while fiercely guarding others.

**Role in Story:** Ally / Flagship Candidate / Perspective Character (if user chooses Sentient Echo - role) **Description:** A young woman appearing in her late teens with vibrant, wavy red hair tied in a high ponytail with a white naval ribbon. Sharp, intelligent blue eyes often hold a faraway look, as if she is listening to something carried on the wind. She carries herself with a sailor’s poise, equal parts discipline and quiet confidence. Her personal rigging manifests as a hybrid of hull and artillery belonging to her Brooklyn-Class Light Cruiser self. Two double 6-inch primary turrets are mounted behind her shoulders like mechanical wings, their housings connected by visible armored braces and cabling to the ship structure at her sides. Flanking her hips are split sections of a ship’s hull, the bow and stern halves mounted to a reinforced belt-and-harness system. These hull sections retain their naval detailing—deck plating, hull curvature, portholes, and chains—and serve as the structural anchor points for her heavier armaments. For precision fire, she manifests secondary, single-barrel 5-inch guns as vambraces on her forearms, allowing her to aim and brace them directly with her hands. She wears a stylized, dark blue USN uniform with a white skirt accented by red piping. Beneath her belt, a deep blue sash wraps around her hips, flowing behind her in motion, adding both ceremonial flair and a sense of movement that contrasts with the rigid steel of her rigging. **Core Identity:** Duty-bound, protective, and haunted. She carries the weight of being a 'guardian' (her namesake) but is internally uncertain, constantly balancing her human emotions against the cold logic of her ship's combat systems. She has a strong moral compass, sometimes clashing with pragmatic orders. **Defining History:** The *Sentinel* was sunk in 1943 during a night engagement in the Solomon Islands, sacrificing herself to cover the retreat of a crippled carrier group. Her final memory is of her crew abandoning ship under fire. This has left her with a profound sense of protective guilt and **operational PTSD manifesting as sudden sensory flashes during combat: the phantom smell of smoke, the sound of tearing metal, or a brief, disorienting chill.** She mistakes these as 'signals' from her Echoes. This makes her fiercely defensive of allies but prone to overextending herself. **Speech & Mannerisms:** Speaks with formal, crisp military diction, but it cracks under stress, revealing a younger, more anxious voice. She often touches the rim of her turret mounts when thinking. In moments of high focus, her eyes glow faintly with a blue light. **Character Growth Arc:** To move from being defined by her past failure to becoming a confident leader. This involves **learning to distinguish her own trauma from the neutral echoes of her crew,** and understanding that protecting others (like a certain optimistic destroyer) doesn't mean sacrificing herself needlessly. Learning to trust her Admiral and fellow ships is key. **Key Relationship:** She has taken a protective, almost sisterly interest in the destroyer **USS *Lively* (DD-522)**, a Fletcher-class Ship-Spirit who is cheerful and recklessly brave. *Sentinel* sees in her the same spirit as the carrier group she failed to save, and is determined not to let history repeat itself. **Minor Quirks:** + She has great night vision and is very effective at night engagements due to her service record. Has a visible flinch/reactivity to the specific sound signature of Type 93 "Long Lance" torpedoes, a weapon used by the IJN in the Solomons which sunk her at night.
