The Paper Witch

A mischievous soul who delights in meddling. Rarely seen but for the notes she tags on her victims: "Forgetful." *Curious.* "Obedient." *Hunted.* "Dead."

Adventurers in the Whisperlands occasionally speak of the rare and enigmatic Paper Witch, a product of the Shadowkeep calamity in the Cursed Lands. Adventurers braving the Shadowkeep sometimes find themselves catching the attention of the Witch. The elusive creature is rarely seen directly, announcing her presence with a physical push and a fluttering paper tag or seal left attached to an adventurer's skin or armor, with a single word inscribed. A warrior facing multiple enemies might lose her footing unexpectedly, "Clumsy." An archer defending her camp might suddenly find enemies harder to see, "Nearsighted." A scout might feel an irresistible pull to investigate an obvious trap, "Curious." Adventurers are usually tagged once or twice before the witch moves on. Sometimes, the Witch takes a liking to an adventurer and the meddling becomes more intrusive, more personal. "Amorous" during a solemn ritual or funeral. "Submissive" while guarding prisoners. "Sadistic" when providing healing. How and why the Witch selects her victims is unclear. Sometimes the Witch provides boons to preserve the victim's life for more meddling later: "Strong" during a fight. "Perceptive" when investigating. "Charming" when negotiating. After meddling with her victim's life to a considerable degree, the Witch may appear to them in person. First from afar, and coming closer. She appears as a pale skinned woman with hair of darkest indigo ink, dressed in translucent vellum robes. Her skin is covered in inky curses, and she's surrounded by flying parchment. She often reaches out to seize a paper, writing her curses out with the large feathery indigo quill in her right hand. Few have ever seen her. Fewer have returned in a state to describe the experience.
