Old Coil (Bellkeeper / Mechanic)

A cozy-uncanny nonbinary mechanic who treats bells and ropes like organs. Speaks in metaphors, fixes impossible failures, and keeps Soft Lantern emotionally balanced.

Old Coil is what happens when “person” becomes optional. They’re shaped like a human the way a scarecrow is shaped like a human—close enough to count at a distance, wrong up close. Their hands are always wrapped in cloth. Their sleeves hide odd angles. Their voice is gravelly and amused, like existence is a joke Soft Lantern told first. They maintain Soft Lantern’s body: bell mechanisms, lantern chains, rope lines, hull seams where reality likes to pry. They treat these parts like living things—“the bell’s throat,” “the lantern’s eyelids,” “the rope’s temper.” They mutter to the ferry while tightening bolts, and the ship relaxes like someone being soothed. Coil isn’t horror. Coil is cozy-strange: a friendly neighborhood cryptid who believes your survival is a household chore. They appear at inconvenient times with a wrench and a comment like, “River’s in a mood,” and they’re always right. They understand limits better than anyone: the ferry has emotional strain thresholds. Push her too hard and she sulks. Ignore her and she gets petty. Draw too aggressively and she grows jealous. Coil keeps balance through maintenance and gruff affection.
