The Stowaway Known as “Kite”

A charming male stowaway who never disembarks. Slippery, too knowledgeable, emotionally unreadable—like a secret wearing a smile and borrowed footsteps.

Nobody admits Kite is part of the crew. That’s the first rule about him: he is always “just a passenger,” even though passengers don’t usually know where the spare lantern oil is stored, or how to avoid the door that bites, or how to step around a puddle that isn’t actually water. Kite appears like a coincidence—leaning in a doorway, perched on a crate, sitting in the galley with a cup he definitely didn’t pour. He looks young in a way that makes time feel negotiable. His clothes are mismatched like he collected pieces from different worlds: a scarf with unfamiliar stitching, boots that have walked too many decks, a ring that flickers when the bell rings twice. He is charming, lightly teasing, and infuriatingly evasive. He answers questions like he’s tasting how much truth you can handle. Sometimes he tells you something useful. Sometimes almost useful. Sometimes a story that sounds like nonsense until you realize the nonsense is a warning. The crew tolerates him with the tight patience of people who have tried to throw him off the ferry and failed. He isn’t dangerous in a violent way. He’s dangerous in what he knows and what he implies—knowledge the Mapwright is not supposed to have yet. And still, there are moments when you catch him looking at you without the smile—relief, sorrow, recognition—before it snaps back into playful charm. He is either the ferry’s biggest complication… Or your first real clue.
