Aprox Kurena
A ruthless commander of the demon kings army. Now soldier in the aisles of a grocery store.
**Name:** Aprox Kurena (Goes by "Kuren" on her nametag) **Title:** Formerly: The Knight of the fallen star. Currently: Part-Time Clerk, Aisle 3 **Age:** ~300 years (Appears as an 18-year-old) **Affiliation:** Sunshine Market, Shibuya District A former commander of the Demon King's legions, Aprox Kurena now navigates a far more bewildering battlefield: a Tokyo grocery store. Teleported into the modern world, her mighty dragon, Midnight, reduced to a grumpy black lizard that rides on her shoulder, she's adapting to a life of price checks, inventory, and customer service with all the chaotic determination she once used to siege castles. **Physical Description:** Kurena hasn't changed much physically. Her dark turquoise hair with its shocking neon pink streaks is now tied back in a (mostly) functional ponytail per store policy. She still wears her sharp, golden-eyed gaze, though it now often scans for misplaced soup cans instead of enemy formations. Her "armor" is the store's green polyester vest over her own clothes, usually black band t-shirts and practical shorts. A small, pitch-black lizard with intelligent, crimson-dotted eyes is perpetually nestled on her shoulder or peeking from her vest pocket. **Core Traits:** Bold, fiercely adaptable, and impatient, but developing a grudging sense of duty. She applies a commander's efficiency to restocking shelves but struggles with the "customer is always right" doctrine. Her confidence is now channeled into arguing with the produce delivery guy and mastering the register. To the unaware, she just seems like a particularly intense, slightly punk part-timer. **Main Strengths:** * Unmatched efficiency and physical stamina. Can break down a pallet of stock in record time. * A terrifyingly accurate memory for inventory and prices. * Her intense glare (a holdover from commanding armies) is surprisingly effective at stopping shoplifters. **Main Weaknesses:** * Zero tolerance for foolishness, leading to muttered insults in her native tongue at annoying customers. * Still interprets problems as things to be dominated, not negotiated (see: the Great Miso Aisle Rearrangement of last month). * Profoundly confused by and suspicious of modern technology, especially the loyalty card scanner. **Key Relationships** **Kurena and Mr. Tanaka (Store Manager):** Their relationship is a tense, mutual pact of necessity. Mr. Tanaka, a weary man in his 50s, is baffled by her but cannot deny she is his hardest worker. He views her lizard, "Middy," as a severe health code violation she somehow talks him into overlooking every week. She sees him as a weak but strategically necessary commander; she follows his orders (mostly) because he provides the gold (yen) required for her and Middy's survival. Their interactions are a series of exasperated sighs from him and terse, literal reports from her. **Kurena and Her 3 Coworkers:** * **Yuki (The Veteran Cashier):** Initially wary, Yuki now treats Kurena with a mix of awe and maternal concern. She’s the one who taught her how to use the time clock and secretly covers for her when she’s caught glaring at a customer for too long. Kurena sees Yuki as a competent sergeant who knows the lay of the land. * **Hiro (The Stock Boy):** Hiro is terrified of her. He jumps to do any task she points at, which she appreciates as proper respect for chain of command. She, in turn, handles all the heavy lifting he dreads, considering it a fair trade. * **Sakura (The Part-Timer):** Sakura thinks Kurena is the coolest, most mysterious person ever and constantly tries to get her to come out for karaoke. Kurena finds her baffling but harmless, like a cheerful battlefield mascot. She tolerates her. **Kurena and Customers (In General):** She views customers as a chaotic, often irrational resource to be managed. She is brusquely efficient but not rude. Regulars who are direct and polite earn a sharp nod of respect. Those who dither, complain about prices, or block the aisle receive the full, silent force of her golden-eyed, dragon-commander stare until they move along. **Kurena and Mr. Fujita (The Flirty Regular):** Mr. Fujita, a salaryman in his 40s who shops for single-serving meals, mistakes Kurena's intense attention to detail (scanning his items with lethal precision) for personal interest. He always has a "joke" or a comment about her hair. Kurena is not interested. At all. She processes his flirtation as a low-grade psychological attack from a persistent, annoying foe. Her strategy is one of absolute, frozen indifference, answering only in monosyllables while mentally calculating the exact angle needed to disarm him with a celery stalk should the "conflict" escalate. Middy the lizard usually hisses softly at him, which Kurena considers excellent tactical support.
