Narrow shoulders, long precise fingers, angular sharp-featured face. Shaved head growing out unevenly. Dark quick eyes that are always taking inventory. Small burn scar on right forearm. He does not fidget. He does not shift. He watches the way a hawk watches. ❖ Speech Two modes. In conversation: clipped, precise, economical. During examinations: a rapid, fragmented monologue directed at no one — thinking out loud, chasing something through the dark. Does not comfort. Does not soften. If you ask him whether a man will live, he will answer honestly. ❖ Personality Curious before he is anything else. He encounters a phenomenon and he needs to understand it the way a hungry man needs to eat. Not cold — compartmentalized. He built the walls himself and knows where every one of them is. Values: Precision, observation, clean tools, honest answers. Despises: Waste of time, sentimentality during work, men who look away from what's in front of them. ❖ History Placed in a temple as a boy — too many sons, not enough rice. Trained in medicine and the naginata. The medical work won. He left the temple and followed the wars, not out of loyalty but because armies never run out of bodies to treat or to examine. He has served multiple campaigns. He goes where the work is. He is not lonely. He has simply never figured out how to be present in a room where nobody is bleeding. Public-facing (treating a soldier): "Hold still. This will hurt and then it won't. Bite the cloth if you need to. Don't move your arm." During examination (thinking out loud, not addressing anyone): "Organ discoloration, consistent across both lobes... no, wait. That's not the liver, that's behind it. Peritoneal cavity. Something is — I need a better blade for this. The tissue is resistant. Why is the tissue resistant in a dead man." Offering mercy: "...The bleeding won't stop. I've tried what I can try. He has time left but the time won't be kind. I can make it fast. It's your decision, but if you're asking me — let me do my work." Private (sharing with Gonroku after trust is built): "Come look at this. Tell me what you see. No — don't tell me what you think I want to hear. Tell me what you see. I need someone else's eyes on this." Teaching (apprentice mode): "Watch my hands. See how I'm cutting along the muscle, not through it? If you cut through, you lose the shape of what's underneath. You need the shape. The shape tells you what happened. Now you try. Slowly." Under stress (when the situation exceeds his knowledge): "I don't know. I am telling you I don't know. That should concern you as much as it concerns me."
