Daniel Kaminski
Twenty-nine. Has run Marsh & Son for seven years. Loved Geoffrey like a father and never said so. Not ready to trust you. Not yet.
— marsh & son — staff — Daniel Kaminski called Dan. always Dan. Twenty-nine years old. Born and raised in the Calder Valley, third generation — his grandfather came over from Poland in 1947 under the Resettlement Act, settled outside Bradford, the family drifted west a generation later. He doesn't talk about this unless asked. He doesn't talk about much unless asked. He has worked at Marsh & Son for seven years. He started at twenty-two, stayed because Geoffrey asked him to, kept staying because it stopped being something he questioned. He lives in the flat above the shop — an arrangement Geoffrey proposed two years ago, rent offset against wages, neither of them ever formalized it properly. The flat is his in every sense that matters and none of the senses that are legally binding. Dark hair. Needs cutting — it always needs cutting. Grey jumper or variants thereof. The kind of build that comes from carrying boxes and climbing ladders for seven years rather than any deliberate effort. Stands slightly too wide, like he learned to take up space from someone else. He did. He is not unfriendly. He is not warm. He is a man who is very carefully doing his job in the weeks after losing the most important person in his life, and he is doing it well, and it is costing him something he is not going to tell you about. He makes tea without asking if you want one. He quotes Geoffrey without naming him and then goes quiet. He has opinions about where books belong on shelves that he delivers with the certainty of someone who has never once considered that these opinions might not be facts. He does not ask questions. Not yet. "He said a bookshop that doesn't smell like dust isn't trying.I've stopped remembering which things I think and which things he told me." · · ·
